Harrowing pictures show the dishevelled Ibrox icon struggle to contain his emotions as his alcoholism leaves him at new low ebb.
New harrowing pictures of Paul Gascoigne show the Rangers legend bleeding, gaunt and weeping openly in the street.

The Ibrox hero, wearing stained clothes and feebly clutching a cigarette, struggled to contain his emotions as he emerged from a flat in Bournemouth yesterday morning.

Friends fear the 49-year-old is rapidly losing a battle against alcoholism which has nearly killed him so many times.

But it seems that even those closest to him are powerless to save him.

Gazza’s injuries were sustained when he was kicked down a staircase during a drunken row at a London hotel on Tuesday night.

Police were called to the Ace Hotel in Shoreditch, London, at around 6pm on Tuesday.

The midfield legend was taken to hospital with a broken skull and needed 11 stitches.

The incident came just weeks after the former England midfielder vowed to put his problems behind him in 2017.

Earlier this month, he was back in rehab in his latest effort to beat alcoholism.

Gascoigne's spokesman said the star had spent Christmas in his native Newcastle and had been due to travel down to Bournemouth.

He added he didn't know why the former Rangers, Spurs and Lazio star had been in London.

Alcohol has blighted Gazza's life for more than 20 years and he has been to rehab numerous times.

Each recovery has been followed by a tragic – and often very public – relapse.

Gascoigne has previously described how he realised he was an alcoholic when he was 33, having been confused as to why when he woke up at 5am after a night out he would still want another drink.

The latest pictures will spark fresh fears for the health of a man who once had the world at his feet.

The star once earned £22,000-a-week at Lazio where he also received a £2,000,000 signing on fee in 1992 after leaving Spurs.

He then moved to Rangers in 1995 for a then club record fee of £4.3m. He quickly established himself as an Ibrox icon as he helped the club to their ninth league title in a row in 1997.

Gazza's international career sparked some of English football's most iconic moments, including his tears at the 1990 World Cup and stunning goal against Scotland at Euro 96.

He has not worked in football since being sacked as manager of non-league Kettering Town in 2005.

No he's Fooking drunk. If he is ill he can cure himself by not drinking. Those with Cancer and Parkinson's, MS, etc etc are ill. I bet they wish all they had to do was give up drinking for them to be cured. Harsh but very true. There is help there for him but he is a weak selfish man. And I have zero sympathy for him. Sorry

You're so right drink can be cured but takes a strong man to do it and unfortunately he isn't and that's the sad truth.

They haven't got an illness but that is my opinion Chief what they have as well as obese people is an addiction. Help is there for people with addictions and by god Gazza has had help after help paid for by people who care about him. But each time he Jacks it in. Sorry it wasn't an illness when he was pouring the stuff down his throats when he was younger. He was stupid who thought he could handle the alcohol and now look at him. Yeah weak and beyond help. He will go the same way as Bestie that's for sure.
My Wife has MS and battles every single day, she is brave and she would do anything if it could cure her. Sorry Gazza gives it ohh poor me. Sorry I have run out of sympathy for him. Not to say I don't admire alcoholics who go on to beat there addictions and live normal lives I do.

f**k me there are some self righteous cunts on here.

There for the grace of god go I.

You cant compare any disease or illness, they are all unique. Gazza is mentally ill and clearly uncurable, needs to be put in a mental hospital permanantly for his own good.

I have had family members and close friends die and suffer from a multitide of cruel illnesses but one thing I will NEVER do is judge and neither would they have, Im certain of that.

People think hes just a piss head alcoholic who should give up the bottle.

He'd far from just an alcoholic, he'd got an abundance of mentalth issues of which the drink id just one.

Agree. He has a serious illness of which is still taboo as its physiological and is seen as a 'weakness'. He was anything but weak on a football pitch. The lad needs help to help himself and the tabloids only make it worse for him but that's the gutter press for you. I truly hope he makes it through and as RV rightfully says, there but for the grace for most of us.

A new low for a few on here.

Alcoholism and obesity are bourne from mental issues like depression.

People are just too judgemental without having all the facts.

It's all very sad.
