Brian Murphy is understood to be in contention to make a shock debut for Cardiff City at Griffin Park on Boxing Day.

Ben Amos has seen his position come under scrutiny after high profile mistakes against Wolves and Barnsley, and Neil Warnock could yet make a change for the crucial game.

The Bluebirds boss has been linked with a number of goalkeepers with a view to a January move but has two Championship games before then.

It is also unlikely he will be able to strengthen in that department before the home clash with Aston Villa on January 2.

It would be a remarkable turnaround for Murphy, a back-up for most of his time in UK football and signed amid very little fanfare.

The situation as it stands

Cardiff have been assessing their options this week and there's still a chance Ben Amos could yet be given one more shot to prove he has the necessary quality.

What has become increasingly clear, however, is that the situation has changed increasingly since former boss Paul Trollope said this: “Brian’s come in as experienced cover, he’s a fantastic professional and a good goalkeeper. He’s got experience at this level, and played quite a few games in League Two last season, he’ll provide a good experienced head to work with Martyn.

“The other two are in competition for the first team slot. We had to overhaul that department but Ben Wilson’s made really good progress, Martyn’s nurtured and developed him. When it came to selling Simon, Ben’s progress was a factor in that. Amos has a good pedigree, so then it's just down to who is producing.”

If Amos is dropped for Boxing Day then WalesOnline understands Murphy is very much in with a chance.

Indeed, he may well have played before now had he not suffered an injury in training, which he has now recovered from.

So what's Murphy's story?

The goalkeeper arrived at Cardiff without much of a reputation, having spent a year at Portsmouth as they finished sixth in League Two.

He made 21 league appearances but couldn't agree terms on a new deal. Neil Lennon was thought to want to take him to Hibernian but nothing materialised. With Cardiff left reeling from the departures of Simon Moore and David Marshall within a few weeks of each other, he was brought in to provide cover.

Brian Murphy playing for Swansea in 2003

Cardiff sold Simon Moore to Sheffield United just weeks before Hull swooped for David Marshall
Before joining Portsmouth he spent four years at QPR, where Neil Warnock had two separate managerial stints. He played just 11 league games.

Before that was a short spell at Ipswich Town and a successful spell in the League of Ireland with Bohemians, named the Goalkeeper of the year for three seasons in a row.

Murphy had gone to Bohemians from Swansea, where he had been snapped up on a free by Brian Flynn. However, he was unable to beat Willy Gueret to the number one spot.

It is unlikely he'll be able to nail down a long-term spot in the Cardiff City first team, but he may yet get an unexpected chance or two to show what he's capable of in the coming weeks.
