Celtic winger Scott Sinclair claims this derby is the fiercest

By John Verrall

Celtic are due to meet Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers on New Year's Eve for the third time this season.

Celtic winger Scott Sinclair has told the Glasgow Evening Times that Swansea City’s match with Cardiff City did not come close to matching the intensity of the Old Firm derby.

Sinclair only moved to Celtic last summer from Aston Villa, but he has already played against Rangers twice.

And the winger says he has never experienced a derby like that before during his football career, even though he used to play for Swansea.

“When I first played in it at Celtic Park, I could tell the Old Firm derby is a big occasion,” the attacker said.

“I’m sure it will be an experience and I am looking forward to every minute of it. We are taking each game as it comes and we will go into that one full of confidence.

“It was great when we had the Old Firm game here and the Man City game in the Champions League was also unbelievable.

“I played against Cardiff for Swansea but nothing compares to the derbies up here.

"I played home and away in the Welsh game. It doesn't compare.

"We had the early morning kick-offs but it doesn't come close to Celtic-Rangers.”

Celtic have won both the Old Firm derbies so far this season, and looked the dominate side in doing so.

The Bhoys first beat Rangers 5-1, before picking up a 1-0 victory in the League Cup.

Rangers have improved since the start of the season, but Celtic are still unbeaten in domestic action - and they have built up a 14 point advantage over their Glasgow rivals.

He's right of course, but if he was now with Swansea having left Glasgow he'd say the opposite.

Not only that he's only tasted the modern derby of recent times and let's face it we're all good modern football fans now. It's not the derby of old for us these days with fans frothing at the mouth at the thought of our six fingered cousins coming to ours or the days we'd invade gypo land in our thousands.

He's right
Even if he had experienced our Derby at its worse I reckon it wouldn't have beat the Old Firm - you have to factor in the political and religious hatred too - plus the actual attendence

Is a game between two clubs in different cities, forty miles apart, even a derby? Assuming it is, then there must be quite a few derbies that are more intense than ours. I lived in Rome for four years!

I've been to both games, Rangers/Celtic is much better for the atmosphere, but thats because, theres No restrictions, more away fans and of course a bigger crowd.

As to safety and more likely trouble,Cardiff/Swansea is way ahead nowadays.

In terms of scale the Rangers V Bheasts game is obviously much larger but have to say I've seen more boxing at City V Jacks games. The Glasgow games are very well policed and everything is segregated however there tends to be a lot of trouble away from the matches in towns and villages around Scotland. As for atmosphere Rangers V Celtic wins hands down, part of the reason for this is numbers I've been at a game with 128,000 there though today it's 60k at the Big Jock Knew Camp and 50k at Ibrox or Hampden.

BTW I met a Glasgow copper in Tenerife a few years ago and he told me Celtic supporting coppers are delegated to the Rangers end and vis versa, just to throw another bit of edge to proceedings.

If you took away the bubble Cardiff v Jacks would probably be just as volatile as Celtic v Rangers. Imagine thousands of Cardiff arriving at Swansea train station and hitting the pubs? Carnage.

It depends which team you support as to which Derby is the most significant all aspects taken into account. I always thought that the Arsenal v Tottenham was the one to watch. In terms of a reason to hate each other, there definitely is! There is a long story behind the history of the two clubs dating back to 1912 (or something) with big reason to hate each other! When I think of Cardiff v Swansea I guess the only reason to hate each other is fact we are the biggest clubs in Wales and are a short distance between each other in terms of geography. Now I know lots of you may come back and give many more reasons for hating jacks but IMO the old firm is a bigger Derby. Dont get me wrong Cardiff v Jacks can get ugly and I look forward to our Derby matches next year in the championship v the jacks :bluescarf: :ayatollah:

bubbles dont work within cities do they. so the local police force just have to deal with west ham turning up at spurs or chelsea , brum at wba and villa and vice versa .etc etc.

Last game I went to in the liberty was awful. The 8 hour day being escorted, the shit atmosphere and obv the result. Playing Swansea next year doesn't really excite me as much as it should or used to if I'm honest.

Re: The Old-Firm or Cardiff City v Swansea City?

It's easy to say but neither rangers or Celtic have to endure official buses, straight into the ground, hours before kick off, police searches, alcohol ban, 8 hour day, carted off for foul language etc.... It'd be a bit different if they had all the above put on them.

This isn't the first time you've done this, please STOP adding things to people's posts. I don't want pictures added to what I've written, especially ones of people who couldn't even take my local Pub. This must be the strangest football message board in the whole of the UK, stop meddling, no wonder there's less and less posts on here.

Police Scotlnd are brutal and every game supporters busses are stopped and searched for alcohol (funnily enough the middle class fannies who go to Murrayfield don't get the same treatment) also you'll be arrested for foul/offensive language. A Rangers Fan got 4 months in the jail for singing a "banned" song furfuxsake.

stopping buses isnt quite the same as a bubble.
you are a police captive for the duration. coaches get pulled over while police take half a dozen at a time into the ground .no getting off until your within the liberty fenced off away car park.then straight into ground all you see of Swansea is 7 houses, 8 if you got good eye sight.

Without doubt worst trip ever, next to a smelly bog a defeat to the jacks and the m4 shut!!! Swore I wouldn't do it again, but if they come down I will be chomping at the bit. The good one was the 2-2 I think Ross scored a pen.

I understand that we've had bubble games V Man U in the Champions league, my point was fans are treated every bit as badly in Scotland as the rest of the UK. Football used to be somewhere the working man could blow off steam, now it's a sanitised farce. Rangers Celtic games aren't as intense as they used to be, still the best derby in Britian though.

Re: The Old-Firm or Cardiff City v Swansea City?

Sounds about right. The Derby games that he was involved in was very tame compared to the Derby matches of the 80s and 90s. The time we played at the Liberty the Jacks made good noise but our fans it was very muted. The fact we played in Red it didn't feel like our team and it did impact on the atmosphere considering the rumour we was going to play in Blue before the game.
The first game against the Jacks at the CCS was good especially at the end when Chopra won it for us.
Hopefully we can continue hostilities next season and with us back in blue it will mean something again.

Nothing touches the Old Firm for passion, even if it is ridiculous out of date sectarian shit.

As for on the pitch, Cardiff City vs Swansea City is better, in terms of overall quality. Mostly due to Rangers having some players who struggled in League One, and Swansea City players like Sigurdsson, would be Celtic's best players.

The bubble trips certainly lead to more posturing and attacking 'sitting ducks' in the safe knowledge you'll never get to an away fan

The South Wales derby is tame these days. Last one I went to was down the liberty when Bellamy scored the winner and the banter between the fans was quite friendly.

Shame we didn't beat Reading in the play-offs a few years back and set up a final with the jacks, then the whole of London would have seen how passionate our derby is.I think it would have gone up most people's estimation, espeacially the good folk and constabulary of north London!
