Garry Monk has been a revelation since taking over as Leeds United head coach in the summer, propelling the club up to enter Christmas sitting in a play-off spot.

His success has left pundits wondering quite why Swansea City ever got rid of him a year ago, but one manager who saw instant managerial talent in Monk was former Whites boss Neil Warnock.

Currently manager of Championship side Cardiff City, Warnock had high praise for Monk when he came up against him as Crystal Palace manager two years ago.

Quoted by The BBC, Warnock raved about the Swansea side Monk had put together.

He said: "Swansea are probably the best team I've seen this year. Garry's a good lad. I always liked him as a player. He's fitted in like a glove.

"I look at him and you can see he's enjoying it. He's got the respect of people like Ashley Williams, who he played with, the fans and the board.

"If anything I think he's taken them on. They're tougher. He's lifted them and they're on a higher planet."

Monk led Swansea City to a seventh placed finish in 2014/15, which made their subsequent struggles the next season even more surprising.

After a run of more than 10 games with only one win last Autumn, Swansea panicked and gave Monk his marching orders.

With the Swans now sitting in the Premier League relegation zone a year on, and Leeds pushing for promotion, their decision looks even more ill-judged than it did at the time.
