History and description

Griffin Park was built in 1904, though initially consisted of nothing more than a small single stand. Previously, Brentford had played at five different locations before leasing the new site in the west of London. The first match at the ground was a league match between Brentford and Plymouth.

In the late 1920s, a new main stand was built followed by further gradual improvements on the other stands in subsequent decades, but overall Griffin Park remained a rather modest affair.

The rise of Brentford to the Championship in 2014 made further improvements necessary, but significant expansions have remained impossible due to the stadium being enclosed by residential housing.

The club has therefore been working on building a brand new stadium, and in 2015 secured planning permission for a new 20,000 capacity ground at less than a mile east of Griffin Park, which it hopes to move into in 2017.

Brentford hope that a large crowd at Griffin Park on Boxing Day will inspire the team and maintain their good record at home, and return to the unbeaten run they enjoyed at the start of the campaign

21/12/16

Brentford must use their home advantage over the Christmas period to gain momentum and keep their good record at home, according to Bees right back Maxime Colin.

The Frenchman hopes that a large crowd at Griffin Park on Boxing Day will inspire the team and maintain their good record at home, and return to the unbeaten run they enjoyed at the start of the campaign.

Home form has been sticky since the defeat to Barnsley with the Dean Smith's side beaten at home by Fulham and Birmingham before bouncing back against Burton Albion on December 10.

Colin said: “We will try and win every game at home like at the start of the season and hopefully bring back the three points as a present for the supporters.”

Brentford defeated Burton 2-1 in their last home outing and with successive games at Griffin Park against Cardiff and Norwich, who thrashed them 5-0 on December 3, over the festive season, they have a chance to close the gap on the playoff hopefuls.

Colin believes that the team can return to their early season form and added: “We started really well at home in front of our fans and then we had a bit of a bad moment but now we are doing well again and we would like to keep our run going.”

Dean Smith’s men are currently in mid-table, nine points off the playoffs but must also be wary of being dragged into a relegation battle by struggling Cardiff, who sit just five points behind them.

Colin missed last season’s Boxing Day fixture through injury but is eager to be out on the pitch on Monday as his family are attending whilst they visit him for Christmas.

He explained: “Last year I was injured so I was in the stands for that game but this year I hope I will be on the pitch. It is better to be at home than away on Boxing Day and I hope we will bring the three points home.”

Brentford kick off their Boxing Day match against Cardiff at 1pm before hosting Norwich five days later in the 5.30pm game.

Bluebirds Fans Turn Out In Force For Boxing Day Trip To Face Brentford

More than 1,500 Bluebirds fans are exprcted on Boxing Day to set off for Cardiff City’s Championship clash at Brentford (1pm).

Supporters coaches will set off early in the morning for the first of City’s two remaining fixtures before the New Year. They follow the match at Brentford with a trip to Sussex, where they take on title-chasing Brighton at the Amex Stadium, on Friday, December 30 (7.45pm).

Manager Neil Warnock has pledged to make changes after Cardiff’s 4-3 home defeat against Barnsley, although that is their only loss in four matches.

Warnock was appalled by defensive errors in that game and one of those came when goalkeeper Ben Amos ran outside the penalty area and was caught out as Barnsley swept past him to score.

But the City manager also pointed out that the defensive mistakes were not all about defenders. He said that two of Barnsley’s goals came after Craig Noone and Junior Hoilett failed to do their jobs properly when the visitors had possession.

He would not say anything more about which changes he will make, but he could turn to experienced former Manchester City and Swansea keeper Brian Murphy, 33, in place of Ben Amos.

Another option is Ben Wilson, aged 24, but Irishman Murphy looks favourite.

Captain Sean Morrison and Bruno Manga will again link up at the heart of defence, particularly with Sol Bamba ruled out again by suspension.

Bamba was banned for two games after being sent off at Ipswich, while he then had an extra game added after being charged with violent conduct by true Football Association.

“We are delighted,” said Warnock. “He got one added game for the extra aggression when he came off, which he deserved.

“We will miss Bamba for the Brentford game. I thought it was a good FA hearing.

“As far as I am concerned that is water under the bridge now. Bamba and I have spoken, I can’t see it happening again.

“I said to the commissioner, I was hoping he could show me more aggression. He’s only been booked once this season, as a centre half.”

Bamba will be available for the trip to Brighton in Cardiff’s final match of 2016, which eases concerns for Warnock with Manga heading off to the Africa Cup of Nations in January.

The tournament is being held in Manga’s home country of Gabon and their first game is against Guinea Bassau on January.

Manga still looks likely to leave the Bluebirds during January, but City’s bid to find him a new club will be made more difficult with the big centre-half in Africa for most of the month.

Keiran Richardson and striker Marouane Chamakh will also be leaving, having signed contracts until the new year when Warnock brought them to Cardiff.

“I will speak to those two,” said Warnock. “It is important I get the right balance.

“I am not 100 per cent, but I think both lads understand. They are two I could get off the wage bill, so chances are, I will be releasing them.

“I feel a bit sorry for Chamakh, but at the time when I came in, I felt we needed an influx of players. I wasn’t aware of Emyr Huws or Declan John, as they were away with the Welsh squads.

“I didn’t think we had cover for Rickie Lambert, but then I was impressed with Kenneth Zohore in training so brought him into the team.

“Richardson and Chamakh have been good professionals, but we need to manipulate this squad and those two are easy as their contracts are up. They will both find clubs.”

Warnock wants four new recruits during the January transfer window, including a goalkeeper and a defender, while he says they are close to signing a striker.

“I’ve agreed to make one signing already, a young lad who I’ve been looking at over the last few months. I’m hoping from January 1 we’ll be signing him, but that’s not official yet,” he said.

“I won’t be naming him until then. It’s difficult with it being Wales, if they’re English you’ve got to get international clearance for them, then clearance from Wales. I just hope the people in those departments are Cardiff City fans.”

Warnock is focussed on Cardiff’s match at Brentford, who are in mid-table, nine points off the play-offs. Cardiff, though, are only five points behind them, and know a win would ease fears of being dragged back into the relegation zone.

Opposition View: Cardiff City

Boxing Day marks the mid-point of the season, how’s the first-half gone from a Cardiff perspective?
Well the table tells it's own story. A lack of firepower up front and a defence that keeps giving away soft goals is a pretty toxic mix. It's been much better over the last ten games or so, where there have been a fair few defeats but much better fight and certainly signs of improvement in most areas of the pitch. Despite a brilliant win over Nottingham Forest a month or so back, the away form has been average at best so I'm sure Brentford will be confident of getting something out the game.

What were fans expectations heading into the season? Has this season been as they expected?

That's quite a tricky one to answer. Really people were hoping for the play-offs, given that they finished eighth in the table last year. Having said that, people were sceptical about Paul Trollope's appointment and when Fabio and David Marshall were sold to the Premier League, those top six hopes evaporated. We're now at a point where fans are just hoping Neil Warnock can keep them up this year and have a proper pre-season to build from.

What sort of impact has Neil Warnock made since coming in? Is he the man for the moment at Cardiff?

He definitely is. He'd be the first to admit that he'd have like a win or two more under his belt, home defeats to Wigan and Barnsley were particularly disappointing. But first and foremost he's lifted the mood around the place, he communicates brilliantly with the fans and they love listening to him. The team are definitely competing better and are improving in attack, creating more and better chances for themselves. It's for that reason that most fans are still quietly confident they'll get out of trouble and into lower mid-table.

Who are the key players to watch out for?

Junior Hoilett has been brilliant since signing. He took a little bit of time to get up to match fitness but is flying now and can do real damage either out wide or through the middle. He is perhaps not quite as quick as he was when he first broke onto the scene but he has lost none of his trickery or vision. Aron Gunnarsson, meanwhile, has finally brought his international form to the Championship, an absolute warrior in front of the defence. He also had a long-throw of Rory Delap proportions in his armoury and he'll be quick to unleash it at Griffin Park come Boxing Day.

How do you think Cardiff will approach the game on Monday?

Well they've certainly evolved their game in the last month and are a lot more pro-active. I wouldn't be surprised if there are goals in it.

Firstly Merry Christmas to all fellow Bluebirds.

I know quite a few who are not happy with the day/time changes to both Brentford and Brighton games but in my case it has helped and as I don't get to too many away games now I'm taking full advantage. Earlier start to get to Brentford but at least me and the kids will be back home in time for the Boxing Day party at the inlaws and with work commitments we couldn't have made Brighton on the original date.

Lets hope its all worth it :santa: :bluescarf: :bluescarf:

Brentford v Cardiff: defensive struggles

Sunday, 25 December 2016

By Dean Smith

A section of Brentford fans are growing unhappy with Dean Smith and Richard O’Kelly’s management of the team and this blog can understand why. Left-back Tom Field, who has filled a once problematic position for the Bees is often substituted and the youngster’s departure was partly what turned the tide at Leeds last time out.

However, 14th is not a bad position to be in, considering that the club is at the lower end of the Championship spectrum in terms of budget. It would be unfair to say that Smith had been working with a top six squad, because they lost David Button and Jake Bidwell to their West London rivals in the summer. They also lost James Tarkowski and Toumani Diagouraga to Burnley and Leeds respectively in January, then Andre Gray and Stuart Dallas to the same two clubs before Smith’s regime.

The club’s summer transfer policy was to sign the best young players from League One, who are not necessarily above midtable Championship calibre, so this blog would argue results are as expected. Where the management team should take criticism, is in their reluctance to sign tall, physical players. According to WhoScored, the average age of their likely starting line-up against Cardiff is 24 with an average height of 181cm. Their central midfield, in almost every game this season, has consisted of Ryan Woods and Nico Yennaris and it is hard to see either striking fear into opposing midfields.

Cardiff provided more battling qualities in the first few games of Neil Warnock’s tenure, though they defended poorly in the 4-3 defeat to Barnsley last time out. They had plenty of experienced players on the pitch, yet still lacked leadership and organization, particularly when dealing with counter-attacks.

Some fans have called for Sol Bamba not to play for the club again after his on-field confrontation with Warnock. In some ways though, his best game for the club came against Barnsley – when he didn’t play, but it became evident how much the team needed him. Bruno Manga has class on the ball and good feet as well as pace, but is prone to the odd slip in concentration and some fans feel he could be more suited to a midfield role.

The Bluebirds have conceded 13 goals in their last seven matches while Brentford have shipped 14 in the same timeframe. Both managers have defensive issues to address.

All bags/hand bags will be searched.
Due to a large crowd attending its expected up to 15 minutes extra it will take to get the fans in the ground.

Sunday 25th December 2016

Brentford and Cardiff fans are asked to arrive early for the Sky Bet Championship match against Cardiff City as extra security measures have been put in place.

The Bees host The Bluebirds at Griffin Park on Boxing Day, kick-off 1pm, and the Club is asking all those coming to the match to arrive at least 30 minutes before kick-off as there will be additional searches when entering the ground.

With the UK on severe terrorism alert, as it has been since August 2014, Brentford FC will be doing all it can to ensure all matches at Griffin Park are held in a safe and secure environment. In order to assist with this – and help fans enjoy their day – all attendees will be scanned with metal detectors and subject to pat down searches on entry to the ground. There will also be a thorough search of all bags and fans are asked to avoid bringing bags in to the stadium if possible.

It is expected that it may take up to 15 minutes longer than usual to enter Griffin Park on Monday – and at all matches until further notice – so fans are advised to pass through the turnstiles as early as possible. The security searches will also extend to staff and media attending the match and everyone coming to Brentford on Monday should leave extra time.

The Club would like to thank fans in advance for their help and understanding on this matter.

Cardiff City: Neil Warnock urges his side to stop conceding goals to improve poor form

BBC

Monday 26th December 2016

Cardiff City have conceded five goals in their last two games

Cardiff City boss Neil Warnock says they must improve their defence if they are to turn around their poor Championship form.

The Bluebirds are 20th in the table and have kept just two clean sheets in 22 league matches this season.

Their two games where they did not concede came in their 0-0 draws against Birmingham and Brighton respectively.

"Defending starts from the front and everyone has to come on board with that," Warnock told BBC Radio Wales.

"I am disappointed we don't have more clean-sheets, but I'm not surprised. I'll be disappointed in January if we don't get more.

Warnock's side face two away games during the festive period as they travel to Brentford on Boxing Day and in-form Brighton on 30 December.

"You don't win anything or go anywhere if you don't start defending better and keeping clean-sheets," Warnock continued.

"I'll be hoping we can start putting that to bed soon."

The Bluebirds have won two of their last 15 games on December 26

By Dominic Booth

Monday 26th December 2016

Christmas cheer has often proven hard to come by for Cardiff City.

The Bluebirds have an unenviable record on football's most famous fixture date, having won just twice in their last 15 matches on Boxing Day since the turn of the century.

Cardiff face a trip to Brentford on December 26 this year, where they will hope to revoke the memories of 2012, their last victory on Boxing Day. That day, Malky Mackay's side beat promotion rivals Crystal Palace 2-1 en route to Championship promotion.

But, that and a straightforward 2-0 victory over Coventry in 2010 aside, it's been a tale of festive woe for Cardiff on Boxing Day. Perhaps Neil Warnock will be instructing his players to take it easy on the Bucks Fizz and turkey sandwiches this Christmas.

Here are the Bluebirds' last 15 Boxing Day matches.

2001 – Draw 2-2 v Reading

Cardiff had sunk as low as Division Three the previous season, but fresh from promotion under Alan Cork in May 2001, they were going well in Division Two. Yet the Bluebirds could only manage a draw with fellow high-flyers Reading, as Robbie Earnshaw bagged a brace at Ninian Park.

A young Robert Earnshaw celebrates in Cardiff City colours
2002 – Loss 0-2 Luton

Following Cork's sacking after failing to lead Cardiff to Division One, Lennie Lawrence soon took over, but this result away at Kenilworth Road was a blot on his copybook, the lowpoint of a successful season. Cardiff were beaten, but they'd later taste play-off success in May.

2003 – Loss 0-1 Walsall

The 2003/04 season saw a clash between two of Division One's mid-table sides at Ninian Park. And once again, Boxing Day spelt trouble for the Bluebirds, who were edged out 1-0 by Walsall.

2004 – Draw 1-1 Wolves

Cardiff were on a horrible run of form in December 2004, but this draw with Wolves halted a slide of four defeats in five games. Cameron Jerome got the goal in front of 17,000 at Ninian Park.

2005 – Loss 0-2 Plymouth

Another bumper crowd at Ninian Park, but another defeat for Dave Jones' Cardiff, who saw captain Darren Purse sent off. A lacklustre Bluebirds' performance allowed Paul Wotton and David Norris to score the goals for Tony Pulis' Pilgrims. One to forget.

2006 – Draw 2-2 Plymouth

Plymouth were again the visitors to Ninian Park the next Christmas but Jones' troops were in no mood to let them march back to Devon with three points again. Steven Thompson smashed in both goals to keep Cardiff in the promotion hunt.

2007 – Draw 2-2 Watford

The Christmas hoodoo went on, but this time after a respectable point at Vicarage Road. Roger Johnson and a youthful Peter Whittingham scored the goals to hold second-place Watford to a decent draw.

Whittingham signed for Cardiff in 2007 for £350,000 from Aston Villa
2008 – Draw 1-1 Reading

What a game this was. Cardiff were denied all three points – and the chance to break an eight-year jinx – when Reading GOALKEEPER Adam Federici scored a 96 minute equaliser at the Madejski Stadium. That after Michael Chopra's 89 minute goal looked to have sealed the win. Dave Jones was not happy.

Adam Federici scores for Reading against Cardiff
2009 – Loss 0-1 Plymouth

Plymouth, again. This truly was a day to forget for Jones and his promotion-chasing charges. Fresh off three consecutive wins, fourth in the table, they welcomed rock-bottom Plymouth to their new home, Cardiff City Stadium – and somehow contrived to lose the game. Gary Sawyer's deflected effort in the 84 minute silenced a 20,000-plus home crowd.

2010 – Won 2-0 Coventry

Finally, some Christmas cheer for Cardiff fans! Craig Bellamy and Seyi Olofinjana were the heroes as Cardiff returned to the Championship's automatic promotion places with victory over Coventry. It was far easier, far more straightforward than any of their previous Boxing Day struggles.

Craig Bellamy celebrates scoring on his Cardiff City debut in 2010
2011 – Draw 1-1 Watford

The 2010/11 season was very much a transitional one for Cardiff, after the disappointment of missing out on promotion countless times under Dave Jones. Malky Mackay secured a draw on Boxing Day against his former club, en route to a six-placed finish and a League Cup final in his first season. An Adrian Mariappa own goal secured the point at Vicarage Road.

Malky Mackay issues instructions to Kenny Miller
2012 – Won 2-1 Palace

Yet another reason to remember the 2012/13 with unbridled fondness. Savour the moment, Cardiff won on Boxing Day! Mile Jedinak's early goal caused a few Christmas jitters among the 26,000 at Cardiff City, but Craig Noone and Aron Gunnarsson hit back to keep the Bluebirds top of the table.

2013 – Loss 0-3 Southampton

Christmas 2013 was a time of great uncertainty for Premier League Cardiff City. The pre-amble to this Boxing Day clash with Southampton saw Bluebirds fans protest against owner Vincent Tan, but there was little fight on the pitch as Jay Rodriguez's brace ensured a 3-0 win for Mauricio Pochettino's Saints. Malky Mackay was sacked the next day.

2014 – Draw 1-1 Charlton

Any hopes of immediate promotion to the Championship had already dissipated by Boxing Day 2014 and Russell Slade's difficult start as Cardiff boss was dented by Johann Berg Gudmunsson's late leveller at The Valley. Cardiff were 11, seven points off the play-offs.

2015 – Loss 1-2 MK Dons

Another Boxing Day result to consign to the record books. Noone seemed to have secured a draw for Cardiff against the lowly Dons after Nicky Maynard opened the scoring against his former club. But Josh Murphy bagged a late winner to rock the Bluebirds' play-off ambitions.

Warnock's men travel up to London this lunchtime to take on Dean Smith's Brentford's side having had nine days to get over their last minute defeat to Barnsley last time out.

The Bluebirds boss promised to make changes after that defeat, and we now wait to see exactly how they will line up this afternoon.

With matches against Brighton and Aston Villa coming up in the next week, it seems vital that Cardiff pick up all three points on their travels today as they look to keep themselves out of the bottom three heading into 2017.

Brentford are currently 14th in the Championship table and come into this fixtures having won just two of their last seven matches, losing 1-0 to Leeds last time out.

Follow our updates below for all the build up and match action.

Kick is at 1pm today
