Cardiff City news: Marcus Bettinelli a target from Fulham as Neil Warnock looks to end keeper woes

Ben Amos has been struggling at Cardiff and Bettinelli is sitting on the bench behind David Button at Craven Cottage

CARDIFF CITY boss Neil Warnock wants to sign keeper Marcus Bettinelli from Fulham to solve his number one problem.
Warnock is close to agreement on a loan for the former England under-21 prospect who is out of favour at Craven Cottage.

Ben Amos has had some nightmare displays lately and Warnock is keen to replace him when the window opens.
Bettinelli is on big wages but Cardiff will pick them up to make him their new first choice.

The Camberwell-born keeper joined the Whites in 2011 and was then farmed out to non-league Dartford on loan.
After a season in the Conference he went on to make 39 appearances in the 2013-14 season during two stints on loan at League Two in Accrington.

In November of the following 2014-15 campaign at Fulham he made his England Under-21 debut against the Czech Republic in Prague. He made 31 Championship appearances that season to help the Whites avoid relegation.

But game time has been harder to come by since former Spurs stopped joined the club two summer ago from West London rivals Brentford.

We have to do something about the Goalkeeping situation as it is undermining the rest of the team and we won't progress until it's sorted.

I feel sorry for Amos but it seems Annis' warning back in September about him via his contacts at Bolton has sadly come true.

No wonder Warnock did not want to discuss it, I think he is really not happy with Amos!! :violent3:

Cardiff City linked with Fulham goalkeeper

Out of favour Fulham goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli is a January target of Cardiff City’s according to The Sun.

Bettinelli is expected to be on big wages at Craven Cottage but the Bluebirds are reportedly willing to offer a good deal to make him their number one choice. It is understood that the move would be a loan move, with a view to a permanent deal.

The 24 year-old is yet to make an appearance for Fulham this season after the Cottagers signed Brentford goalkeeper David Button this summer.

Bettinelli has experience at Conference Premier side Dartford as well as League Two side Accrington Stanley, before playing 31 times for Fulham in the 2014-2015 season. His performances for Fulham in that season saw him earn an England U21 call-up.

With questionable recent performances from current Cardiff stopper Ben Amos, it has left manager Neil Warnock assessing the goalkeeper position, and the Bluebirds will be desperate to find a long-term replacement for former keeper David Marshall.

The signing would leave Cardiff with four goalkeepers in their ranks, with on-loan keeper Ben Amos already at the club and current first choice, as well as Development keeper Ben Wilson and experienced third choice goalkeeper Brian Murphy.

A goalie who can't get in a Fulham team that leaks goals..has been on loan to a conference team and is on big wages????

Something doesn't add up here...not the most inspiring potential signing!!!

Not much choice in January, we need a bit of luck that a premier reserve or third choice needs some game time

Could there be an element of planning for the future too? After all Amos is on loan so is it not preferable to have your own player?

Cardiff set to make loan move for Bettinelli

Neil Warnock is poised to offer Marcus Bettinelli some precious first-team football as he prepares to table a loan bid for the Fulham goalkeeper.

The former England under-21 international has endured a frustrating few months at Craven Cottage as deputy to summer signing David Button – and was even overlooked in favour of fellow academy graduate Jesse Joronen during Fulham’s EFL Cup campaign. Bettinelli’s wages will be covered by Cardiff, according to a report in the Sun, as Warnock is desperate to replace the under-par Ben Amos in the Bluebirds’ goal.

The 24 year-old goalkeeper has been at Fulham since he was fourteen and signed professional terms with the club in 2011. He enjoyed impressive loan spells with Dartford and Accrington Stanley before making his Fulham debut in their 1-0 win at Brentford in the League Cup in September 2014. Bettinelli eventually established himself as the club’s senior goalkeeper under Kit Symons and made 31 appearances last season, having recovered from a serious knee injury. Bettinelli, who made his England under-21 debut against the Czech Republic in November 2014, has made 57 senior appearances for the Whites.

Slavisa Jokanovic brought in Button from Brentford over the summer and much will depend on whether the Serbian head coach decides to stick with the former Tottenham goalkeeper as his number one after some iffy performances in recent weeks. Bettinelli could be line for a recall in the Boxing Day clash against Ipswich Town at Portman Road, but if he remains on the sidelines the goalkeeper could be set for a move to Fulham’s FA Cup third round opponents.

Well at least he is loud and a good communicator...according to Fulham
...And he snubbed Chelsea.

Biography
Brave off his line and when taking crosses, Marcus Bettinelli has worked tirelessly on all aspects of his game. An excellent communicator too, the player’s voice is often one of the loudest out on the pitch.

In October 2012, Marcus was rewarded with a contract extension which tied him to the Club until June 2014. That same month, he agreed a loan at Conference Premier side Dartford where he quickly became first choice until his return to Fulham in March 2013, and he was called out on an emergency one-month loan to Accrington Stanley in August 2013 before the club extended it until the end of the season.

He was recalled by Fulham on Boxing Day 2013 following an injury to Maarten Stekelenburg and took his place on the substitutes' bench as the Whites won 2-1 at Norwich City.

Returned to Stanley where he continued to impress as the Lancashire outfit moved clear of the League Two relegation places. His form saw him named Accrington's Young Player of the Season.

Following the departures of David Stockdale and Maarten Stekelenburg - the latter on loan - in the summer of 2014, it became a straight battle between Marcus and fellow Academy graduate Jesse Joronen for the number one jersey.

Joronen was initially preferred but Bettinelli's performance in a Capital One Cup match at Brentford saw him keep his place. Until the arrival of Gabor Kiraly, that was.

But the appointment of Kit Symons as Manager saw Bettinelli reinstated between the sticks, and he went on to enjoy a superb season from a personal point of view. The fans agreed, too, as they voted him second in the Player of the Season poll, while he also won international recognition with England Under-21s.

After signing a new four-year deal at the start of the 2015/16 campaign, Bettinelli soon suffered an unfortunate knee ligament injury during the 2-1 defeat to Hull City in August. Despite reports claiming the stopper would be out for the entire season, he returned seven months later, and was back between the posts for the final nine games of the campaign.

His father, Vic, is Fulham’s Academy Goalkeeping Coach.

Bettinelli did not want to be third choice at Stamford Bridge
Fulham goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli has revealed that he rejected the advances of Premier League champions Chelsea because he did not want to sit on the bench at Stamford Bridge.

The 23-year-old attracted interest from the Blues, who were in the market for a goalkeeper to complement the talent of Thibaut Courtois and Asmir Begovic, but decided to stay at Craven Cottage in order to receive regular game time.

Bettinelli has progressed through Fulham's youth ranks and, having spent spells on loan at Dartford and Accrington Stanley, felt it would have been foolish to leave the club after claiming the number one jersey for his own last season.

“There was always that speculation with Chelsea, but I did not want to be sat on the bench," Bettinelli said.
