" WALES / ENGLAND / SCOTLAND AND NORTHERN IRELAND FINED "

Monday 19th Dec 2016

Wales have been punished and fined by FIFA for fans' touching poppy tribute

FIFA charged Wales for supporters wearing poppies in the ground

Wales have been fined 20,000 Swiss francs by FIFA over the remembrance day tributes before and during the World Cup Qualifier with Serbia.

The fine, which works out at around £15,000, is 'in relation to several incidents, including the display of political symbols'.

Wales were under investigation for a number of incidents at the game, including supporters wearing the poppy in the stands and a member of the armed forces holding a bunch of poppies at the entrance/exit of the players' tunnel.

The FAW decided against wearing poppies on their shirts or armbands and were shocked to be charged after the game. They were particularly concerned with the fact their own supporters were included in the charge sheet just for paying their own personal respects.

On the night, Welsh fans unveiled a giant poppy tribute in the stands in conjunction with the FAW.

England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland have all also been fined.

England were handed the heaviest fine, 45,000 CHF, with Scotland fined 20,000.

Northern Ireland were fined 15,000 CHF for their poppy display while the ROI were fined 5,000 CHF for wearing a shirt commemorating the centenary of the Easter Rising during a friendly against Switzerland.

Wales' manager Chris Coleman stands with military personnel during the anthem
FIFA's disciplinary committee chairman Claudio Sulser said: "With these decisions, it in not our intention to judge or question specific commemorations as we fully respect the significance of such moments in the respective countries, each of them with its own history and background.

"However, keeping in mind that the rules need to be applied in a neutral and fair manner across FIFA's 211 member associations, the display, among others, of any political or religious symbol is strictly prohibited. In any stadium and on the pitch, there is only room for sport, nothing else."

There had been fears that Wales could be docked crucial points in their bid to reach the 2018 World Cup, but FIFA have settled for a lesser sanction.

If so many lives had not been lost in the war, and Hitler's forces had prevailed, FIFA may only have Germany and Argentina as members now !

100% agree :thumbright:

From BBC

Fifa has fined all four home nations for displaying poppies during World Cup qualifiers around Armistice Day.

England and Scotland players wore armbands featuring the symbol when they met at Wembley on 11 November.

Wales and Northern Ireland's respective games featured displays to mark the event on the pitch or in the stands.

England have been fined 45,000 Swiss francs (£35,311), Scotland and Wales 20,000 Sfr (£15,694) and Northern Ireland 15,000 Sfr (£11,770).

As you headlined it Annis, "An utter disgrace"
FIFA is one of the most corrupt organisations in the world but they don't do anything about their own house.

They will be able to appeal this but as far as I am aware FIFA appeals go to a FIFA panel so it will be a carve up. There should be the option to go to a completely independent body i.e.law courts to fight this. FIFA were wrong when they brought the ban in and they are still wrong now. The poppy does not glorify war, it is a symbol to remember those who have fallen who were fighting for freedom.

For such ludicrous fines to come from such a corrupt organisation is laughable. FIFA needs a gigantic kick in the teeth over this. I hope that all the countries involved fight them all the way on this.

FIFA are not fit for purpose the whole rancid organisation needs rebuilding from the ground up.

Additionally, I believe this is more than they have ever fined anyone for racism in football!! Genuinely disgusting.

Re: " AN UTTER DISGRACE "

Also this sets a precedent so that every time an international is played around 11th November this problem is going to come up.

Looks like there will have to be fines every time one of the British teams plays a game during early November from now on.

What a bunch of wankers those running the game really are.

I think us fans should now wear poppies at home and away games. The fans must fight back. We can then sing - We wear what we want,we wear what we want, f**k off Fifa, we wear what we want.

They obviously don't see the irony here.

If millions of people hadn't died protecting the freedoms we cherish today, idiots like those running world football would not be in a position to fine countries whose brave men and women fought for our liberty.

Idiots to a man.

You took the words from my mouth.

Exactly what I wanted to say.

Whatever is this world that we live in coming to?

The sooner that this organisation is abolished, the better.

So even after Blatter, FIFA are still an out-of-touch, bloated and bureaucratic organisation run by overpaid self-policing idiots. How can they lecture in morality when they have and still preside over corrupt world cup bids by Russia and Qatar, the latter allowing slave labour deaths on building castles in the sand.

They won't change and the only way it will ever be fir for purpose is by football associations breaking away and forming an alternative. But then you'd never get countries like Russia and Qatar joining as they wouldn't be able to bribe.

Common sense and respect should have prevailed here as opposed to some clueless FIFA bureaucrat being seen to be following their ridiculous rules. An insult to all football fans. Get rid.

Absolutely awful idea. The poppy isn't some bashing stick to show contempt towards FIFA.

The appeals will be interesting as all four home nations' associations are permanent members of the international board that polices the rules of the game - including the one used to justify this fine. FIFA issued a statement in November that included this:

“Fifa fully respects the significance of commemorating Remembrance Day on November 11 each year.

“The Laws of the Game are overseen by the International Football Association Board (composed of the four British FAs and Fifa) and (are) applicable to all 211 member associations. The relevant Law 4, para. 4, clearly states that the players equipment should not carry any political, religious or commercial messages.

“The Laws are applied uniformly in the event of similar requests by any member association to commemorate similar historic events.”

This is the same FIFA that agreed in 2011 that it was fine for the poppy emblem to be worn on armbands during international matches - but has taken a totally different view in 2016. Any appeal will hopefully force them to explain their view that the poppy is 'political' within the meaning of the laws, and why they have done a 180 degree turn from 5 years ago.

the I.F.A.B make the rules mate, its FIFA that implements and polices them.

Are you referring to Wales fans or Cardiff fans? Because I can guarantee that the usual Wales away following would never do such a thing because they know better than to make the poppy a symbol of petty one-upmanship.

The poppy doesn't just represent the first and second world wars, but ALL conflicts of which the UK has been a part. People often conveniently forget that.
