Exclusive: Cardiff City prepare January bid for Hearts star

Express Sport

By Scott Burns

Monday 19th December 2016

Cardiff are showing a strong interest in Callum Paterson

With the Bluebirds sitting 20th in the Championship, just three points above the relegation zone, manager Neil Warnock is keen to bring in the Scotland international defender to help safeguard their survival bid.

Paterson’s contract at Tynecastle expires at the end of the season.

Hearts are only likely to sell next month if they get a bid in excess of £500,000 as they would earn more than that by keeping the 22-year-old and claiming training compensation.

Stars who have played in both Scottish and English Premier Leagues

Express Sport understands Paterson is aware of Cardiff’s interest.

The full-back has made no secret of his desire to move down south and is unlikely to be short of options, with Derby County, Birmingham City and Blackburn Rovers all having him watched in recent weeks.

From my Hearts mate

He's a good player...especially going forward and pinging in very dangerous crosses. Scores lots of headed goals from set-pieces. His weakness, from the Hearts fans point of view, is a lack of pace when defending. Might end up being a midfielder. He played as a striker when younger.

It's a no from me.

The guy got no pace and apparently is weak with it when defending. We have been crying out for pace especially after this weekend with those breakaway goals we conceded. Also this weekend was not a one of as we suffered all last season with it.

He is good with headers at set pieces but we already have someone with that ability in Morrison. I'm not seeing anything in this guy that we don't already have.

Struggling to see the sense here.

We do throw out some cover stories, hope we are after Tony Watt and have been up there to have a look at him

Since he left us Watt has scored 1 goal in 9 for Blackburn and 1 in 15 for Hearts. Looks good when he first joins a club then rapidly goes off the boil as he did with us (2 goals in 9 ).He has talent but we need someone more reliable.

A very attack minded defender! He scores a hell of alot of goals for his position and could give us more threat and pace! Sign him up Warnock! Just what we need! :ayatollah:

On 11 August 2013, Paterson scored his first goal of the 2013–14 campaign, when he headed home the only goal in the Edinburgh derby against Hibernian at Tynecastle.[26] On 27 April 2014, Paterson scored a brace against city rivals Hibernian in a 2–1 win. A week later he scored again in a 5–0 win over Kilmarnock and also scored three days later against Partick Thistle.

So what's his situation at Hearts... is he really on the move?

Certainly. Paterson's contract expires in the summer and he is thought to have a buyout clause in his deal.

However, Hearts are financially on very sound footing and so will not be worried about cashing in necessarily. If teams are unwilling to meet his buyout they could hold on until the summer and then get some compensation when leaves on a free.

Former Hearts boss Robbie Neilson, who has since moved to MK Dons, said this in November: "I’d like to hold on to Callum until the end of the season, but this is Scottish football. If a big bid comes in, for him or any other player, it will be considered.

"But the hope is we can keep him until the end of the season and go from there.

Paterson is a product of the Hearts youth system

"He’s been doing well, he’s an international player and the club’s top scorer — not like me when I was a right-back!"

Cardiff would also be facing very stiff competition from across the Championship.

Derby supremo Steve McClaren has already been to Tynecastle to watch Paterson this season, with Birmingham City and Blackburn Rovers also said to be interested.

One to watch, but a January move would be a surprise.

The hearts board is Jamboskickback, there's a thread on there about Patterson moving to the City if anyone wants to know Hertz fans thoughts on the player.
