Could have been 5 assists today with the quality of the crosses he was putting in. That shot on the half volley the keeper saved was fantastic technique and he also made a great covering tackle in the 2nd half when it seemed certain Barnsley would score.

Whitts tackling ability has been missed by some who post on this board, some even describe it as "inept".

Great game today from Whitts and he didn't deserve to be on the losing team.

That shot was brilliant and it was coming straight towards us in the Canton and looked like a goal from the moment he hit it.

Very good save from their keeper in fairness.

He is highly rated by managers and fellow professionals whose opinion of him carry far more merit than the keyboard warriors on here ...... I doubt if any of them have ever played the game at a good level or even kicked a ball

He was good today but still so slow on the ball and robbed in possession a good few times. Also caught out when he was slow making decisions (which may be partly down to his options at the time).

Against that his set piece deliveries were excellent, he scored, and most of his passes were good (except for that nonsense with Kadeem towards the end that wasted a set piece and a few major misunderstandings with Peltier).

I would give him a 6 or 7. No one else in the squad can do what he does, and game on game he is getting better at talking, tracking back and tackling. He will never have pace - but if he did he would be in a different league.

If Whitts was 6 or7, then Gunnarson would be 5 or 6 and the rest would be 3 or 4 at best - clear man of the match.

he only made 1 tackle & assisted barnsleys 3rd, with the aid of Amos. Great crosses though.

Not good enough without the ball too slow and us the root of our problems in midfield we need to find the next Whits now a younger mote pacey playmaker

Re: ' Peter Wittingham Today '

Mon Dec 19, 2016 11:10 pm

Have to agree with you Wez but actually finding this player is going to be the problem.
I'd play him wide right in front of Peltier (solid defender who rarely crosses half way so it would mean PW wouldn't be racing up and down flanks too much but could make the extra man in midfield).
A Kavanagh type player (with legs) to partner Gunnar in the middle and Hoilett on left. If only it was that simple eh.

Agree there most be a player in the reserves of the premiership or a good up and coming player in the lower leagues that could do a job hopefully warnock has something up his sleeve

Whitts technical ability with pace and tackling ability will NOT be appearing for a championship club any time soon.

Perhaps we should have tried to sign Steven Gerrard from Liverpool 15 years ago if you're looking for the complete package.

Yes lets give up looking for perfect players who have the lot as they rarely exist in football let alone in the Championship.

Paul Scholes is one of the best footballers this country has ever seen but he couldnt tackle and had no pace. Did United fans moan about that? No because they had other players in the team to do the things you apparently want Whitts to do as well as do the good things that he does.

If players are playing in the Championship its because they have flaws in their game. If we brought O Keefe in for Whitts would he give us more energy and win more tackles? Yes of course he would but can he pass like Whitts? Deliver a ball like Whitts? Would he have scored that goal on Saturday? Errrr NO he wouldnt have. Absolutely not.

Why City fans would rather concentrate on the negatives of a player rather than what he brings to the team I dont know. Whitts is doing his job in the team its others who are not doing theirs.

Dear oh dear. The old "Anyone can take a corner" nonsense argument.

Alex Ferguson once said Charlie Adam was worth 10m for his corner kicks alone.

2 of the goals conceded on Saturday were from people not doing their jobs when Whitts was taking a corner ffs. How was he to blame?

Re: ' Peter Wittingham Today '

You need a good balance in your side, which includes ball winners, players who are good in the air, players with pace and playmakers with a good footballing brain. I would put Whittingham in the last category. Players like Kavanagh and Ian Gibson were'nt the fastest things on two legs, but had the class to be able to read the game and always looked as if they had all the time in the world when they were on the ball. You have to have ability for that, and Whittingham is that sort of player. He may have been more effective a few years back, but he still has a lot of quality about him. Plenty of our recent managers obviously think so and surely they can't all be wrong. We can't expect him to be another Bobby Moore or someone like that, if he was he would'nt have spent the bulk of his career playing at this level.

It obviously to see that whitts legs have gone and we conceded far to many goals this season coz our midfield is being over run by younger quicker players like I said we need to find the new Whitts and upgrade him

Re: ' Peter Wittingham Today '

Tue Dec 20, 2016 12:47 pm

Tom Adeyemi is probably faster than Whitts, lets have a midfield of him and Gunnar.

Barnsley have a system built on speed. It was very effective on the counter attack because either Warnock or the team didn't do their job. If we had that team we would be moaning that we need really faster technical players that can compete with 6"2' monsters on set plays because Cardiff were taking the piss on almost every set play. Huddersfield were the same.

Speed of thought is quicker than the ball, but thats much quicker than legs !!!!

Rugby and American football are games of creating mis-matches. Barnsley countered our prowess at set plays by leaving speed up top, because they couldn't handle them. If we scored the two we should have we would have been out of sight.

IMO- Warnock and his team are just as responsible for their goals as any of our players. Unless Holiett or Noone didn't take up their designated places on our set plays. Remember he left Bennett on the bench.

Gerrard and lampard in their pomp wouldn't have stopped their goals.
