Malky Mackay backed by anti-racism group after politician condemns his appointment to top Scottish FA job

Former Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay has found himself at the centre of a new rumpus after landing a new job as performance director of the Scottish Football Association.

The promotion-winning Bluebirds manager, of course, was the subject of an 11-month investigation by the Football Association surrounding alleged racist, sexist and homophobic text messages sent between himself and his Cardiff head of recruitment Iain Moody.

The FA decided not to bring charges "in respect of private communications sent with a legitimate expectation of privacy," but that decision was condemned by a number of organisations, including anti-discriminatory group Kick it Out, the Jewish Leadership Council and Women in Football.

The FA decided not to bring charges "in respect of private communications sent with a legitimate expectation of privacy," but that decision was condemned by a number of organisations, including anti-discriminatory group Kick it Out, the Jewish Leadership Council and Women in Football.

Mackay denied being racist, sexist or homophobic and the FA stressed during its announcement in July 2015 that the ex-Cardiff chief had voluntarily undertaken equality and diversity training.

The move has been backed by anti-racism group Show Racism the Red Card Scotland, which has wished Mackay well in his significant new role.

However, SNP MSP Clare Haughey claimed Mackay's appointment would "risk sending a message that bigotry is no barrier to a top job in Scottish football, a particularly terrible message to send to the young players of tomorrow".

Show Racism the Red Card Scotland responded to those remarks by saying the 44-year-old deserves the chance to revive his career.

Chief executive Ged Grebby said in a statement: "After admitting to sending text messages that were very regrettable and disrespectful to other cultures Malky Mackay underwent equality and diversity training through an education programme with the FA and we wish him well in his new role at the SFA."

The organisation's campaign manager, Nicola Hay, also said: "SRtRC firmly believes that education is key in combating homophobia, racism and racist attitudes.

"Malky Mackay has been through an education programme and we hope that this will have changed his attitudes and made him more aware of appropriate and inappropriate language/behaviour."

Mackay was sacked by Cardiff in December 2013 and dropped a claim against the club six months after, apologising unreservedly to owner Vincent Tan for "any offence" he may have caused.

News of the text messages emerged in August 2014 when Mackay was on the verge of being appointed Crystal Palace manager. Cardiff announced they had sent a dossier to the FA, which ruled in July 2015.

Mackay was controversially hired and then fired by Wigan during the course of the 11-month investigation.

The former Queen's Park player has had opportunities to return to management in the past 18 months and it is understood he was on Celtic's shortlist to replace Ronny Deila before Brendan Rodgers was given the job.

He is set to replace Brian McClair, who quit the SFA in the summer, a little over a year into his job amid frustration over obstacles to the implementation of his planned reforms of youth football.

I don't agree with what Malky did but everyone makes mistakes and as long as he's learnt from those mistakes and doesn't do the same thing, that's what's important. Most politicians are in no position to criticise because they are the least respected of all individuals.

he is clearly very ignorant, and a hypocrite, and holds views that are out of place in 2016 PC britain, but i bet so do 90% of football managers.

that shouldn't stop him getting work in football, he's entitled to earn money from the game. i think its time to move on now.

Malky did wrong, he knows that (no matter how much Moody was the main perpetrator) and he's paid a hefty price to date. Let him move on with his life! :bluebird:

Scotland is one fukked up country, Mike Tyson was pilloried by right on Leftwing feminist groups over a very dodgy rape conviction, they were screaming for him to be denied access to Scotland, strangely convicted double murderer Don King faced no such negative campaigning. Malky is being attacked by a Scots Nazi MSP because she knows squawking racist gets column inches in the Scottish Press and her political profile will be raised. Irrespective of your views on Malky what he did should not preclude him working in football.

He may have said something stupid, but I don't believe that Malky is any more racist or sexist than most of us on here. I think it's about time people get over a comment that was made a couple of years back. He has apologised, now he should be allowed to get on with things. The dodgy dealings also discussed today is something completely different, but nothing has been proven one way or the other yet, and until this has been sorted he is innocent of any wrongdoings. Things may change in the future, but for now he should be treated like any other job applicant.

MM dodged the FA bullet because they were private text messages between him and Moody and therefore were deeded to be an opinion between 2 individuals which would-not lead to a third party being offended, in other words it came under Freedom of Speech.

I actually agree with that decision otherwise we would be living in a Police state.

However, it is now in the public domain and everyone knows that at one time MM was happy to use such offensive expressions in private. This leads to a question of would he pass a fit and proper person test?

Unfortunately there are some situations where the risk is too great to allow some people to return to their old professions when it is known they hold or once held certain views. We have recently seen the folly in allowing coaches with sexual convictions to return to football and this is similar in many ways as a racist could cause untold damage to a young footballers.

We don't know if MM simply took the 'education' course in order to paint himself white again or he really took what he learnt to heart. Let's be fair he has a bit of form when it comes to being devious and I for one would-not trust him no matter how much he claims to have learnt his lesson.

By all means he can get employment but he will have to accept that his previous behaviour means he must look further down the employment ladder and cannot work in any industry where he could possibly pose a threat to vulnerable people. That might be sad for him personally but he should have thought of that before sending those stupid texts.

I can see what you are saying, and I am not sticking up for Malky in particular because I never really liked him. My argument is once someone has apologised and served his sentence, that person has earned a second chance. We let people who have committed serious crimes out of prison, and you could argue that they could come out and repeat their crimes. I would'nt call Malky's stupidity the biggest crime in the world, and I have told jokes about women and people of certain nationalities but don't consider myself racist, and my wife will tell you I am certainly not sexist. I would'nt get all worked up if someone called me a Welsh sheepshagger, especially as I have'nt shagged one for at least 2 months now. I worry that this country has gone ott with this politically correct stuff, and I am glad that I can laugh at myself in the same way I laugh with and at others.

Is the problem here that he is working for the Scottish national team, and by that is held to higher standards ?

Football is decades behind other "professions" where most of us would never or text such things on company equipment.

I do not have a high profile job, but understand my company could sack me for gross misconduct due to breaking the dignity at work policies and that is being a nobody. Being manager of Cardiff City with the intense local media and possible promotion to the richest league in the world. It was the lack of any situational awareness that was frightening !!!!!

Believe me the Scottish Football authorities do not set a high standard.

Do you honestly believe that if you went for a job interview (especially a well paid job) and informed your prospective new employers that sometimes you make racist and sexist jokes but don't consider yourself to be either, they would give you a job?

Never in a million years because that is the reality of the age we live in. The risk is too much especially if someone is working with vulnerable people, in this case youngsters. As I said we have seen the foolishness of giving second chances to those convicted of sexually abusing young boys at football clubs.

What MM did might not be quite on the same level but I am sure that anyone who has been a victim of racist or sexist abuse would tell you it is not something that can be swept under the carpet just so the perpetrator can have a 'second chance'

So people who kill or rape can get a second chance at life, but do something that is not politically correct and you've had your lot. Like you say this is the reality of the age we live in where we have a society with an odd set of values. I wonder how many users on this forum have never done something that could be regarded as racist or sexist.

i think the issue here is not if he should be allowed to work or get on with his life.
its Malky himself that seeks out high profile jobs so the media attention goes with the teritory.
