Rickie Lambert: Expected to miss out for Cardiff

Cardiff boss Neil Warnock begins life without Sol Bamba in Tuesday night's crucial Sky Bet Championship relegation battle against Wolves in south Wales.

Bamba has been banned for two games following his spectacular sending-off against Ipswich on Saturday - but could face longer on the sidelines after confronting both the referee and Warnock.

Defender Bruno Manga is set to be handed his first start since October in place of Bamba, while Craig Noone could replace the out-of-form Kadeem Harris.

Rickie Lambert is expected to be rested and Marouane Chamakh is still out meaning a start for either Frederic Gounongbe or Anthony Pilkington.

Wolves boss Paul Lambert has indicated he would have no concerns about keeping faith in 19-year-old goalkeeper Harry Burgoyne for the crucial showdown.

Burgoyne made his debut in Saturday's thrilling 4-4 draw against Fulham after Andy Lonergan joined Carl Ikeme on the injured list.

Ikeme, who has been out with a hip injury, has a chance to return but if he fails a fitness test Burgoyne will once again start in goal.

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson is pushing for a start after playing for the final half-hour on Saturday in place of Romain Saiss.

Wolves

Full name: Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club
Nickname(s): Wolves, The Wanderers
Founded: 1877; 139 years ago, as St. Luke's
Ground: Molineux
Capacity: 31,700
Owner: Fosun Group
Manager: Paul Lambert
League: Championship

Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club is a professional association football club based in the city of Wolverhampton, West Midlands. The club was originally known as St. Luke's FC and was founded in 1877 and since 1889 has played at Molineux. They compete in the Championship, the second highest tier of English football, having been promoted from League One in 2014 after a solitary season at that level.

Historically, Wolves have been highly influential, most notably as being founder members of the Football League, as well as having played an instrumental role in the establishment of the European Cup, later to become the UEFA Champions League. Having won the FA Cup twice before the outbreak of the First World War, they developed into one of England's leading clubs under the management of ex-player Stan Cullis after the Second World War, going on to win the league three times and the FA Cup twice more between 1949 and 1960. It was during this time that the European Cup competition was established, after the English press declared Wolves "Champions of the World" following their victories against numerous top European and World sides in some of British football's first live televised games.

Wolves have yet to match the successes of the Stan Cullis era, although, under Bill McGarry, they contested the first-ever UEFA Cup final in 1972 and won the 1974 League Cup, a trophy they lifted again six years later under John Barnwell. However, financial mismanagement in the 1980s led to the club's very existence being under threat as well as three consecutive relegations, before a revival and back-to-back promotions under manager Graham Turner and record goalscorer Steve Bull saw them finish the decade in the Second Division, winning the Football League Trophy along the way.

Despite the financial backing of then-owner Sir Jack Hayward during the next decade, they were unable to regain a place in the top flight until 2003, when manager Dave Jones ended their nineteen-year exile but only for a solitary Premier League season. The club returned for a three-year stay at the top level after Mick McCarthy led them back as Football League Championship champions in 2009, but his dismissal in 2012 preceded relegation back to the Championship. The following season saw two further managers dismissed as the club then suffered a second relegation, ending up in League One. However, in the following season they gained promotion back to the Championship where they currently reside. The club's current head coach is Paul Lambert, who took charge in November 2016, within months of the club being taken over by the Chinese investment group Fosun Group.

Be interesting to see how many Wolves will bring down, apparently there's been very little interest from their end, still expecting 800 plus though, usually a very well supported side when they come down here. over a thousand for a early/late kick off on sky last year wasn't it?

WARNOCK | THE HOME FANS CAN LIFT US

By CARDIFF CITY FC

Monday 12th December 2016

Following a hard-earned draw on the road against Ipswich on the weekend, the Bluebirds have a fine chance to build on that point with two home games on the bounce this week.

City face Wolves at Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday evening, before welcoming Barnsley to the capital on Saturday, and Neil Warnock is relishing the opportunity to rack up some home points.

Neil began by assessing City's performance last time out, calling for his men to back themselves to produce a similar showing at CCS.

“We created more in the last twenty minutes with ten men," said Neil. "The lads just need to have a bit more confidence in themselves. We’re quite solid now – I though Connolly did really well and Peltier.

“I was pleased with Whittingham in there too. It’s just a matter of getting a goal or two and we’ll have to look at how we can do that."

The City manager is expecting to see two intriguing battles with Wolves and the Tykes, with the Bluebirds faithful on hand to cheer their men over the line.

“I think it will be a very interesting game," he continued. "We’ve got to look to win some home games now and we’ve got two opportunities this week to get some points on board. We’re going into it with confidence as we’ve had two good games really.

“I think the fans have been fantastic. They’ve got behind us, even in the second half last week when Brighton were on top. The fans can lift us though, we came back stronger in the end and Chris [Hughton] was happy with a point in the end.

“It’s an intimidating place if the crowd gets going – hopefully in the next two games they can lift the roof off again.

“All I know is that the lads are giving me everything... I think that’s why the fans are happy with them, because that’s all I can ask.”

Early team news

Lambert's struggles to play two games in a short period of time have already been well documented by Warnock. And with Marouane Chamakh seemingly floundering in his battle to find match fitness, it could fall to Frederic Gounongbe or Anthony Pilkington to deputise up front.

At the back, Bruno Manga is expected to come in from the wilderness to replace Bamba. How quickly he settles back into the defence will be a big factor against Wolves.

The Gabon international is due to link up with his national team for the African Cup of Nations in January and is set to leave the Welsh capital permanently on his return. But for now, Manga has a big job in step into Bamba's considerable shoes.

Warnock surprised everyone by fielding five defenders against Ipswich, with Joe Bennett on the left wing and Lee Peltier at left back. But whether Peltier and Matt Connolly feature in the same side again on Tuesday night will be a big decision for Warnock. He may revert to a back four which sees Joe Ralls or Craig Noone make a return in midfield.

Kadeem Harris didn't have the best of games on Saturday and Noone injected some much-needed drive off the bench.

Re: ' LATEST NEWS: CARDIFF CITY v WOLVES UPDATED DAILY

Wolves have improved significantly under the guidance of Paul Lambert on Molineux and the manager has spoken of a feel-good factor within the club, as quoted by The Express & Star.

Tuesday 13th December 2016

Football League

Lambert’s Wolves face a huge game in the Championship tonight against Cardiff City, who currently sit in the relegation zone and just two points behind Wolves, and the Welsh side have experienced a resurgence of their own under the guidance of Neil Warnock.

However, with over a month at Molineux now under his belt, Lambert is impressed with the progress Wolves have made and spoke about a feel-good factor within the Midlands club.

“We’ve only been here four games and we have had to rectify many things that were wrong while also trying to win games. But there’s a better feeling around the club now and I think that’s important.”

“You can see it in the way the lads are playing at the minute, they are full of confidence. They are looking forward to Cardiff and we definitely look a threat, that’s for sure. We look a team capable of scoring goals. But we know and understand we have got to be better defensively.”

On the back of a dramatic 4-4 draw with Fulham, where Wolves trailed 3-1 and led 4-3 with minutes to go, Wolves are full of confidence and have lost just once since Lambert took charge, with their run including a victory over QPR.

Just two points above the relegation zone though, Wolves will be aware of the challenge in hand and tonight’s clash with Cardiff is a must win ahead of fixtures against Nottingham Forest, Bristol City and QPR to close 2016.

Cardiff City have a precious opportunity to move out of the relegation zone and leapfrog Wolves at the Cardiff City Stadium tonight.

Paul Lambert's side drew 4-4 with Fulham at the weekend and having beaten QPR the week before, will feel they have turned a corner.

However, just two points above the Bluebirds in the table, Neil Warnock's team can ease the pressure with a positive result.

Cardiff steady...

That goal really shocked this Cardiff crowd, not what they needed.

Cardiff enjoying most of the territory now but Wolves will be happy that way, they’ve got the speed on the counter that means they can sit deep and defend this lead...

Aimless....

Too many aimless balls over the top from Cardiff in the opening period.

They just need to get their foot on it for five.

Re: ' TEAM NEWS: CARDIFF CITY v WOLVES MATCH THREAD

Tue Dec 13, 2016 7:59 pm

Wolves look the most likely...

The two wingers are finding it way to easy to glide through the Cardiff midfield.

A long-range effort flies well over but they need to wake up a bit here.

Cavaleiro draws another foul from Connolly.
