Ipswich Town 1-1 Cardiff City:

By Jamie Kemble

Scorers: Aron Gunnarsson (38′), Luke Varney (52′)

Red Card: Sol Bamba (70′)

Attendance: 15,042

Cardiff City took a point against Ipswich Town on Saturday afternoon despite ending the game with 10 men thanks to a crazy reaction from Sol Bamba.

Neil Warnock and Cardiff City managed to bring a point home from Portman Road after drawing against Ipswich Town on Saturday afternoon.

The Bluebirds had to play the final 20 minutes with 10 men after Sol Bamba’s shocking reaction to a refereeing decision, leaving a Cardiff City physio shoved to the floor.

Cardiff City move level on points with Blackburn Rovers but the draw isn’t quite enough to take them out of the bottom three because of goal difference.

Neil Warnock’s men play at home twice next week, against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Barnsley respectively and they will be hoping to build on two pleasing points to kick off December’s busy schedule.

Meanwhile, a point for Ipswich means they drop to 17th after Brentford’s home win over Burton Albion.

In this one, the Bluebirds took the lead seven minutes from the break when a slip from Ipswich keeper Bialkowski allowed Aron Gunnarsson to tap in from close range.

The home side got their equaliser seven minutes after the break when Luke Varney was given space in the box to dispatch a low strike goal-ward, the effort took a deflection off Aron Gunnarsson, giving Ben Amos no chance of protecting the Bluebirds’ lead.

Cardiff’s afternoon was made a lot more difficult on the 70 minute-mark when Sol Bamba let his team-mates down by retaliating to a refereeing decision. Bamba was given a red card after shoving the Cardiff City physio to the ground and then reacting angrily on his way past his own coaching staff.

Welsh international Tom Lawrence was a thorn in the Bluebirds’ side throughout the afternoon, causing problems all afternoon but he couldn’t get a decisive goal for the home side.

It was in fact the away side who dominated during injury time and they came close to securing all three points with Sean Morrison heading from close range, but they had to settle for a point despite the late pressure.

Final Word

This was as scrappy a game of football as you could wish to see and the number of bookings probably sums it up. The Bluebirds made it difficult for themselves after Bamba’s disappointing reaction to a refereeing decision but did well to secure a decent result.

Ipswich have done well at home this season but Cardiff, despite the challenges presented to hem throughout the afternoon, did well to take a point home.

Neil Warnock will probably have been happy with a point before the match, especially with the Bluebirds’ horrific record at Portman Road in recent years, and he will be satisfied with the point, if not with his centre-back.

It’s not enough to take Cardiff out of the bottom three but it gives them a platform to build on going into two winnable home games next week.
