Friday 9th December 2016

On January 11th Peter Whittingham will have been at Cardiff City for ten years. The midfielder has started 358 league games since his moving from Aston Villa as a 22 year old in 2007.

Whitts has delivered with goals as well scoring 81 in the league. He also started an FA Cup and a League Cup final for the Bluebirds as well.

Hard not to call him a club legend.

Neil Warnock is now preparing to offer Whitts a new deal.

"Financially it might be a little bit different but I think as you get older you have to accept things like that," said Warnock.

"You can't be on the money you are on when your are in your prime."

Warnock added: "But I am sure there will be a contract for him."

Warnock believes he is a "one-off" and has "five or six years" left in his career.

"He looks after himself, whether he can stay at the Championship level for five years, it's very difficult," said the Cardiff manager.

"At the moment to get him week in, week out in the Championship is very difficult for me, but he has a big part to play.

"So it depends how long he wants to play, whether he wants to finish his career at Cardiff or whether he wants to play elsewhere.

"What he has got, nobody else at the club has: he's got a mind, a vision, a brain that's twice as quick as anybody else.

"When a ball comes to him I am thinking 'get rid of it,' he sees things that are impossible for anybody else to see. He makes it look so cool.

"I remember I used to think Bobby Charlton used to cheat, because he never ran about. Later on I realised he was that good he did not have to run about, he used his brain. That's what Peter does."

Whitts was given a new improved contract when Cardiff got to the Premier League approx £25,000 a week.

Peter Whittinghams contract runs out June 2017.

Neil Warnock is now preparing to offer Whitts a new deal.

Neil Warnock:"Financially it might be a little bit different but I think as you get older you have to accept things like that."

"You can't be on the money you are on when your are in your prime."

Whitts has appeared 391 for Cardiff City scoring 81 goals a midfield player.

Whittingham is 32 years old.

What would you offer Whitts?

How long a contract?

Personally No more than £10,000, my opinion.

Whitts has never relied on pace, so he's definitely got a good few years left in him yet. Give him another two year contract I say. Obviously on reduced terms, but still pretty decent money. Sign him up Neil. :bluescarf: :ayatollah:

2 years with an option for a 3rd based on appearances with reduced terms, 10-12k would be reasonable. Won't play every game but as he has never had a bad injury and looks after himself he should be OK through to his 35th birthday.

Really not surprised NW still want's him because, in my opinion, the promotion he wants is more likely with PW at the club.

agree with most of your post and most of what has been posted above, especially nice to read our managers views on Whitts which also happen to be mine.
dont understand this 10k figure though. i think Whitts is one of the few value for money players at the club and has been for years ,so pray that we dont offer him something he finds insulting {as we did with Andy Legg } while we have deadwood non contributors payed more .
also ive read on here ricky lambert who is older and likely to miss games through injury is on 32k and 25k if true, even on the smaller figure, where does 10k come from ? lambert 150% better value for money than PW no
