Eric Bristow loses Sky Sports role after Twitter sex abuse story comments

Eric Bristow has attracted widespread criticism for comments on his Twitter account.

The former darts world champion Eric Bristow has been sacked by Sky Sports after he tweeted comments about the football sexual abuse story on Monday.

Bristow, 59, had been a regular contributor to the channel’s darts coverage since the early 90s but Sky announced on Tuesday morning that he would no longer be used by it. “He was a contributor to our darts coverage in the past but we will not be using him in the future,” a spokesperson commented.

Might be a looney but if some football coach was touching me when i was a kid as i got older i would have went back and sorted that poof out

November 28, 2016
Bristow had caused outrage overnight following a number of tweets, starting with one which stated: “Might be a looney but if some football coach was touching me when i was a kid as i got older i would have went back and sorted that poof out.”

The five-time world champion, who was awarded an MBE in 1989, continued with a series of posts which drew fierce criticism.

More than 20 former footballers have come forward alleging they were victims of child abuse as junior players, the Professional Footballers’ Association chief executive, Gordon Taylor, has said. Numerous police forces are also investigating the allegations.

Another of Bristow’s tweets stated “bet the rugby boys are ok” – prompting a reply from Brian Moore, the former England hooker who himself was abused as a child. “I’m not even going to address the many reasons these tweets are wrong. I’ll just say ignorance is no excuse for this idiocy,” he wrote.

what an ignorant, disrespectful comment. disgusting.

victim blaming at its worst. this abuse was widespread, and largely due to the power and influence coaches had over young children who were desperate to become footballers. he has no idea how he would react under the same circumstances.

now he says:

'what i was saying was when the football lads got older and fitter they should have went back and sorted him out"

some of these people were raped hundreds of times over a 4 year period. they would feel embarrassed, violated, terrified. one of the victims had a panic attack when he was at the train station in the city where bennell lived.

thankfully, bristow wasn't raped hundreds of times by a bullying manipulating man, as a helpless child. he has no right to judge others that were.

PC Brigade out in full force.

Bristow is certainly not alone in wanting to hurt or wishing I'll on a peado.

Its not that part of what he said that is the problem. It was the rest of the bullshit he came out with.

Spectacularly missing the point there. He called the bloke a poof and said if they were real men they would have sorted him out.

Hang on a minute, so if you had an 11 year old son who got sexually abused by his football coach and Eric Bristow called your 11 year old son a poof for not sorting him out, you would see where Eric Bristow is coming from?

Eric Bristow literally said 11 year old footballers are poofs and 11 year old rugby players would have sorted the coach out, which he was quickly embarrassed about when rugby players said this issue has happened to them as well. I found Eric Bristow's comments disgusting and disrespectful and I hope he regrets his comments for the rest of his life.

Incorrect he actually said if it was me I would have sorted the poof out

As in the abuser not the abused

However comments very innappropriate and I actually think the rugby comparison is worse than the original comment as he's insinuating the footballers are too cowardly to do anything about it but as for the first comment however I King of agree with him id definately when older have gone and sorted the abuser out and if not me id have paid someone else to do it

And as for the whole situation it's disgusting hope they go down for a very very long time
