Robson Kanu to wear Poppy at FIFA awards ceremony

Thursday 24th November 2016

Wales hero Hal Robson-Kanu vows to wear a poppy at glittering football awards ceremony in latest twist to FIFA row - Wales Online

Wales cult idol Hal Robson-Kanu has provided a new twist on the row with FIFA by revealing that he will wear a poppy to their glittering awards ceremony in January.

Robson-Kanu has been named alongside Barcelona greats Lionel Messi and Neymar on a 10-man short list for the prestigious Puskas award, which recognises the best goal scored in 2016.

His spectacular effort of course came for Wales against Belgium in the Euros.

And the striker is ready to make his points to FIFA bosses after vowing to wear a poppy to the ceremony.

He made his vow on Twitter only hours after Wales were hit by FIFA with a string of charges for the tributes they made during the World Cup qualifying clash with Serbia at the Cardiff City Stadium earlier this month.

Robson-Kanu has also used social media to encourage fans to give him their vote for the award.

But what are his reasons for choosing to wear a poppy to the prestigious event? WalesOnline caught up with the Wales striker to hear his views.

Why Robson-Kanu insists on wearing a poppy :thumbright:

Wales were hit with a number of charges by FIFA for the tributes they made during the World Cup qualifying draw with Serbia at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Incidents under investigation include the fans' mosaic displayed during the Welsh national anthem and, even more bizarrely, the fact some supporters in the stands were wearing poppies during the match.

But, despite the news, Robson-Kanu remains determined to show his respects and will wear a poppy to the awards ceremony, even though it takes place in January.

"It's a difficult one. It's important that what has happened is remembered," the striker told WalesOnline.

"Those who sacrificed their lives for us. It's very important to remember them.

"They [Football Association of Wales] will deal with the charges but for me it's very important to remember those who made sacrifices for us."

Why he hopes Welsh fans will help him win award :thumbright:

Robson-Kanu is hoping the power of social media can help him land the coveted award after encouraging his 60,000 Twitter followers to give him their votes by posting a link to the nominations page on his official account.

And Robson-Kanu believes the fans, many of which formed the stunning poppy mosaic at the Grange End stand of the Cardiff City Stadium against Serbia, deserve to be rewarded for their incredible support.

Nothing says remembrance like utilising the poppy as a symbol of petty one-upmanship!
