' TWO EX CARDIFF STRIKERS FAILING/BUT WE WOULD LOVE TO HAVE THEM '

Why two Cardiff City heroes can't get in the Aston Villa FC team

What Cardiff City would give to have one of Ross McCormack or Rudy Gestede in their ranks.

By Phil Smith

Wednesday 23rd November 2016

Both are fondly remembered by the Bluebirds' faithful, part of a pair of attacking sides that often frustrated but frequently enthralled.

For many Cardiff fans, the side McCormack played in, also featuring Michael Chopra and Jay Bothroyd, was one of the most dynamic in recent memory.

It says much about the work ahead for Neil Warnock that he will have to overcome sides with so much talent and depth in their squad that they can afford to leave both on the bench.

McCormack cost the Villains £12 million but has fallen out of favour under new manager Steve Bruce. Warnock will probably be lucky to spend a quarter of that in January as he hunts for firepower of his own.

So how come they are struggling, and what do we need to know about Aston Villa more generally ahead of the weekend?

We spoke to Alex Dicken from our sister paper the Birmingham Mail to find out...

Bruce's new system and why it's keeping the big guns out...

"Both Ross McCormack and Rudy Gestede have been victims of the change in system. Gestede started the wins over Reading and Fulham but failed to make a big impression and was dropped. McCormack started against Blackburn and might have done the same against Brighton had it not been for suspension.

"Bruce has played 4-3-3 in the majority of his matches in charge after the team struggled in a 4-4-2 during his first game with Wolves. He might be a little more adventurous at home and use Jack Grealish in midfield after he impressed at Brighton."

So who is bringing home the bacon at the moment?

By Phil Smith

"The problem they both face is that Jonathan Kodjia is in their way, while Gabriel Agbonlahor is back in favour under Bruce.

"Kodjia has been brilliant since Bruce took charge in October and has scored five in the six matches. He has looked unplayable at times and seems worth every penny (£11 million rising to £15 million) that Villa spent on him. Jedinak has been outstanding recently and plays a pivotal role in midfield, something which is recognised by his teammates and supporters.

"And a man that will be known to Cardiff City fans for his exploits with Wales over the summer, James Chester, has been arguably Villa's most consistent performer this campaign. He is captaining the side at present with Tommy Elphick on the bench."

I Mentioned bringing Rosco home the other week and got shot down in flames but a few on here. a short term loan is what I was suggesting as he wouldn't tolerate being a bench player. what a player to fire us up the table and you know Warnock would get him firing on all cylinders... BRING ROSCO HOME im starting the campaign NOW :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

I don't see how it would be coming 'home', he was only here about two years and has had six or seven clubs as well as us so I'm sure he wouldn't look at Cardiff as home either.
Saying that, if the wages etc could be sorted he would be a great addition on loan.

I think I was probably one of 5 City fans who actually rated Gestede and saw he had raw potential. Would love him here now.

With you on that one Dando.

We seem to have spurned so many talents over the years.

Sometimes makes you wonder if the right hand knows what the left hand is doing.

Blooobirds Forever !! :bluescarf: :bluescarf:

a friend of mine who became quite good mates with Rosco when he was here and he loved his time here and NEVER wanted to leave even after his hit and run incident. he was a terrace hero and to me this is his home.. he would jump at the chance to come back here as long as the wages could get worked out.. BRING ROSCO HOME

Oddly enough I was watching the game v Huddersfield in the cup on a flashback video and he showed some great touches and link up play, that was the first season with us, he pinched late and important goals for us towards the end of the promotion season.

A genuine nice lad off the field as well, I was happy to see him do the things he was doing at Blackburn and he never got a proper chance at Villa, bring him back. :ayatollah:

Gestede and link play. Don't make me laugh. He's a donkey.

Get crosses into him and he's good I'll give him that but he couldn't trap a bag of cement.
