Has Jazz Richards been lost in the pile?

By Jordon Jones

Tuesday 15th November 2016

Jazz Richards is yet to play under new manager Neil Warnock and that cost him a spot in Chris Coleman’s Wales squad for the draw against Serbia.

A summer signing which was met with a mixed reaction due to his Swansea City connections, the versatile defender has lost his place in the side since Paul Trollope’s departure. But why isn’t is featuring?

Before Warnock was appointed, Richards picked up a calf injury which saw him miss the games against Austria and Georgia. Not that he would have started those games for the Dragons but he would have been one of the first players to call upon in the case of any injury trouble.

Lee Peltier has been in terrific form and epitomises a Neil Warnock player, by flying into tackles and playing the role of the traditional right-back.

Richards’ problem is that he was brought in to play in the same formation he does under Chris Coleman and now those tactics are long gone due to Trollope’s departure, it leaves him having to work even harder to impress the manager.

Warnock spoke on Friday about players being sold to make way for his own signings, which poses the question does Jazz Richards have a future here?

He poses no risk in terms of success of a transfer as he was swapped for Scott Malone but it already shows that the plans for a Welsh revolution in Cardiff have been swept under the rug for now as Neil Warnock looks to men he can trust.

Of course an injury can always allow a fringe player to get back into the side and that’s what Richards will be hoping for.

An injury to James Collins wasn’t enough for Richards to be called up on for Wales though, as Milton Keynes Dons defender Joe Walsh was called up instead, despite many fans thinking Richards was called up originally, proving that he is highly thought of among Wales fans.

There are some suggestions that Richards continues to suffer from an injury but even that won’t help his cause. Just ask Emyr Huws how difficult it is to get back into the fold after missing a short period for one reason or another.

Is Jazz Richards good enough? I’ll leave that to opinion but he’s going to find it hard work getting back into Neil Warnock’s starting XI and his spot in the Wales squad will suffer for it…that will hurt him for sure.

My personal opinion is Richards is our best right-back.

However, our manager has great faith in Lee Peltier and I think they worked together @ Leeds so he gets the nod. LP is a great defender but you need more than that with full-backs who in the modern game also need to offer something going forward.

JR is a natural in that position and I see a lot of potential in him but sadly I can see him leaving in January.

If we are to do anything this season we have to have fullbacks who can drive into the final third and get balls into the box as well as do the defensive duties.Sadly Richards and John failed to do that under Trollope but to be fair neither did anyone else. It really is a key position these days and I thought Richards was starting to play well before he got injured.

Totally agree.

Best right back?

Get out of here you been to any games this season when hes played?

Worst right back I have ever seen, slow as a snail and is woeful.

Sadly see him leaving? He has done nothing and showed nothing, Peltier is a level better than JR, he does well going forward as well not as good as defending.

Terminate his contract, you just give the vote confidence because he's Welsh.

He's bloody awful. He's had 5 clubs. How many clubs has he ever become a first team regular for?

None is the answer and there is a reason for that.

He isn't very good.

Where have I said I'm giving him a vote of confidence because he is Welsh? :?

As a season ticket holder who attends every home game then yes I have seen JR play :? To be frank if you are going to use a put down then at least avoid the really tried and worn out ones which have been trotted out for decades without any real success

As I conceded Peltier is the better defender but is so limited once he gets past the half-way line. In the modern game the option of an attacking full-back is essential. As I said my is opinion JR offers more as an all round full-back and nothing in your reply has remotely come close to making me consider that is wrong.

Well I do every home and at least 90% of aways
And I'm yet to see jazz take on a defender
All I see is him checking and turning back
Sorry but he does not offer us anything going forward

i missed the first four games of the season and was quite surprised he wasn't as bad as reported on here. But, he is nowhere as effective a full back as Peltier, going forward maybe a bit more flashy, but in defence no competition even against speed.

Well there can't be any reason you rate him because he is dreadful.

He is one of the worst we had. And Jazz Richards goes past the half way line? Clear you must not go to games to suggest he does.

Not the greatest of starts to his city career, but agree he was starting to play well but I think I could struggle unless somebody gets injured.
