Thieves broke into a Maesteg Royal British Legion club and stole poppy collection tins on Armistice Day

They robbed ex-servicemen from their own community! :o

Club secretary David Roberts was disgusted when poppy collection boxes were stolen by thieves in a burglary at Maesteg Royal British Legion club in the early hours of Armistice Day.

The two burglars smashed into the premises in Maesteg, Bridgend , with a crowbar just hours before the nation fell silent in honour of those killed in two World Wars.

After ransacking two bars in the property the two men took “about half a dozen” poppy boxes, £100 in cash, a glass full of staff tips, money from a pool table and fruit machine, and two bottles of Jack Daniels.

The thieves broke into the building with a crowbar and rifled through two bars in the club

“They robbed ex-servicemen, really,” club secretary David Roberts said.

“It’s terrible. They could not have picked a worse time to do it.

“It doesn’t reflect well on them.

“There is supposed to be honour among thieves but doing this two days before Remembrance Sunday is a bit much.”

Everyone is disgusted

Mr Roberts thought the club had probably lost about £300 to the criminals .

“They should be ashamed of themselves,” he said.

“People have already made comments on Facebook .

“Everyone is disgusted about the time of year it happened.”

It was unclear how much was in the poppy collection boxes because they were sealed.

“God help them if they are found because things like that are hard to swallow,” Mr Roberts said.

“It may not have been a great deal of money but it’s the principle.

There IS some CCTV

The raid lasted for about 10 minutes.

The thieves were caught on CCTV but Mr Roberts said footage showed little but two small lights – perhaps from mobile phones – in the darkness.

“We do not know how much money was in the collection boxes, they are sealed,” Mr Roberts said.

“But put it like this – they were ready to be picked up because the collection ends this Sunday."

The empty boxes were found nearby

“They were found about half a mile away in Maesteg swing park with the box from the pool table.

“They were empty.”

He admitted the break-in “could have been a lot worse”.

“They got didn’t into the areas where the safes were,” Mr Roberts said.

“They tried to but they couldn’t.”

They were unable to get much from the pool table or fruit machine because they had been recently emptied.

People are desperate to replace the money

“We’re raising £200 to replace the money that was stolen from the Maesteg British Legion poppy appeal,” she wrote on the page.

“The Royal British Legion in Maesteg has been performing excellent work in the Llynfi Valley for decades and continues to raise money to provide help and support to current and ex-servicemen and women.

“This appeal hopes to go some way to recouping some of the losses so that the Royal British Legion in Maesteg can continue helping our brave soldiers, sailors, and airmen in the future.”

Thieves are 'callous and disrespectful', say police

A South Wales Police spokesman said: “During the early hours of Friday, November 11, between 3.30am and 4.15am, a burglary occurred at the Royal British Legion Club, Commercial Street, Maesteg.

“During this incident a number of Poppy Appeal money boxes were stolen as well as a quantity of cash, and a gambling machine money box.

“This has caused the staff, the club, and committee members a great deal of distress with it being Remembrance Day.

“This burglary demonstrates how disrespectful and callous these criminals are, acting in this manner, on such an important day.

“It appears the persons responsible have then made their way to Welfare Park, Maesteg, where they have discarded some of the items that they have stolen from the legion club.”

 I really hope that is just a figure of speech and not your actual thoughts.

Obviously stealing of any kind is not nice. I can only assume these people are desperate, an awful lot of Wales live in poverty, many addicted to drugs to get by, when you are that low in your life I highly doubt you have much of a moralistic perspective - its just survival mode. I am not condoning theft, but before calling for the death penalty it is probably important to put these things into perspective and attribute some sort of realism here.

An awful reflection of the state of society at the moment.

I'm sure your a nice fella but don't you think that you have gone a bit London-centric here ? maybe if you are living up there it has softened your brain to clack and honk along with all those metropolitan liberal types.

Indeed, mate your type have become an awful reflection of the state of society at the moment - it's true.

Hopefully we are beginning to shift in the other direction - PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY.

Sad though it is that these types steal - but survival mode? get off your arse and change your life - that's what I say to them or face the strict consequences. (now that's a laugh eh? strict consequences - what strict consequences?)

The most significant part of this is... A) They were only there for a short amount of time "10 mins" considering what they took, they must have checked out the premises previously. B) Out of all the drinks they only took Jack Daniels...?
Maesteg is a very small community, everyone knows everyone or are related in some way someone must have heard through the grape vine who done this and I'm sure they will catch them.

I think you are all being a tad unfair on Ealing, he makes a sound point to be fair.

It is an abominable crime and the culprits are hopefuly caught and made to see the error of their ways and punished accordingly.

There is of course though a back story possibly on how they have got to this point in life which could be equaly as tragic.

Of course that does not exscuse their actions but everyone does deserve a second chance and help in life.

Ealing, I get you mate.

Ealing, I did use more of a florid use of language rather than a practical suggestion. For the record I am opposed to capital punishment in any circumstance. You are of course quite right, there are desperate people abroad who are in awful circumstances and often of no fault of their own. I think it behoves all society to offer help to those in need.

However, in the case of charity, I would expect those very people whose lives are so pitifully blighted to stop and think how sad it would be that they might be stealing from others whose lives are equally bleak, if not worse and who may be equally as desperate themselves. Some day someone of a charitable nature may offer to help them. Just how might they feel if someone else took that lifeline away?

I read on Facebook that the police have recovered the collection boxes, hopefully they will get some fingerprints off them!
