Junior Hoilett set to feature for Cardiff after missing Canada friendly

Cardiff forward Junior Hoilett is expected to be fit for Saturday's Sky Bet Championship game at home to Huddersfield.

Bluebirds manager Neil Warnock is confident Hoilett will overcome a minor strain that ruled him out of Canada's friendly against South Korea last weekend.

Anthony Pilkington is likely to return after missing the defeat to Newcastle two weeks ago with a knock while Jazz Richards and Matt Connolly are both close to regaining fitness.

Frederic Gounongbe has impressed in training this week and could be in line for a surprise starting spot up front.

Positive injury update

Neil Warnock: "It’s [international break] given a lot of people a chance to get fit. Matt Connolly isn’t far away. Jazz Richards is nearly fit. That’s been a big disappointment, it’s been one thing after the other. He’s still a bit away but he was running yesterday."

Team News

Neil Warnock should have a near fully-fit squad to choose from after the international break period. Jazz Richards was struggling with a foot injury but should return to contention. Peter Whittingham is expected to return to the Starting XI after coming off the bench to score last time out.

Cardiff City Vs Huddersfield Town: Match Preview

Date and Time: Saturday 19th October (15.00)

Venue: Cardiff City Stadium

Referee: James Adcock

Cardiff City take on Huddersfield Town as they look to improve on back-to-back defeats at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Neil Warnock and his men go up against a Huddersfield Town side who have enjoyed an unprecedented start to the season.

The Terriers are currently third in the Sky Bet Championship, five points behind Norwich City in second and four points ahead of Birmingham in seventh.

Cardiff will be desperate to bounce back from back-to-back defeats suffered before the international break, to Wigan Athletic and Newcastle United respectively. However, Cardiff will take spirit from an improved performance against the latter.

Huddersfield Town come into this one off the back of a near embarrassing 5-0 defeat to Fulham. The Terriers have hit a rocky patch in recent games, losing three of their last four.

The Yorkshire-men did manage to win the other two though, against Derby and Ipswich respectively.

The run of results have seen David Wagner’s team drop from the summit of the Championship table and they’ll be hoping to get back on-track.

When the two teams met last season, Cardiff come out on top on both occasions, winning 3-2 away from home, partly thanks to a sensational Peter Whittingham free-kick. In the home fixture, the Bluebirds come away with a 2-0 victory with Anthony Pilkington on the score-sheet.

Cardiff have a good record against Huddersfield in recent years, winning five of the last eight fixtures. Saturday’s visitors haven’t registered a win against the Bluebirds since January 2003 in the old Division 2.

Why Huddersfield Town need to guard against Cardiff City's smiling assassin

Aron Gunnarsson could be a key man for Cardiff City against Huddersfield Town this Saturday.

The man who captained Iceland to the Euro 2016 quarter-finals, beating England along the way, will be back with his club after the World Cup qualifier against Croatia in Zagreb.

Like fourth-bottom Cardiff, the 27-year-old midfielder, signed from Coventry City in 2011, has had a sluggish start to the Championship campaign.

But reports suggest he has come back to life under Neil Warnock.

The former Town manager, appointed on October 5 and seeking a third win in his sixth match in charge, is playing Gunnarsson in a deeper role than before.

“He has been great since I’ve got here,” said Warnock, who saved Rotherham United from the drop last season.

“Aron is enjoying himself and playing with a real smile on his face.”

It might be outside the transfer windows, but hugely experienced Warnock – who is looking to bounce back from successive defeats – has brought in four new players since his arrival in South Wales.

By necessity, ex-Leeds United defender Sol Bamba, midfielders Kieran Richardson and Junior Hoilett and striker Marouane Chamakh were all free agents.

Canada international Hoilett played under Warnock at Queens Park Rangers and Morocco international and ex-Arsenal star Chamakh at Crystal Palace.

Warnock is confident forward Anthony Pilkington will be available to face his former club.

The 28-year-old missed the 2-1 defeat at Newcastle United last time out through injury.

Warnock can call on other former Town players in defenders Lee Peltier, Sean Morrison and Jazz Richards – and midfielder Emyr Huws.

Cardiff
Cardiff are optimistic winger Junior Hoilett will be fit despite not being able to feature for Canada during the international break.
With Jazz Richards recovering from a foot injury, the Bluebirds are close to a clean bill of health.
Peter Whittingham could return to the starting line-up after scoring as a substitute at Newcastle last time out.

Huddersfield
Midfielder Kasey Palmer and striker Nahki Wells will have their fitness assessed in the build-up to the game.
Harry Bunn missed Huddersfield's last match prior to the international break with a hamstring injury.
Joe Lolley has been ruled out until January after undergoing surgery on a foot injury sustained at Aston Villa in August.

On Huddersfield

Neil Warnock: "We played them at Rotherham last year they were one of the best sides we played in that spell. I was very impressed with Wells and the way they played in midfield, they’ll have a lot of possession because that’s how they are. The lad Palmer has done very well behind Wells I speak to Dean Hoyle quite a lot and I just think he wanted to try something different and it’s done wonders. You can see Wagner is enjoying it, he’s done ever so well. It’s better for us to play against these sort of teams, though."

Huddersfield Town boss David Wagner reveals his blueprint to stop Cardiff City but hopes to share cup of tea with Neil Warnock

Huddersfield boss David Wagner has been singing the praises of Neil Warnock

By Phil Smith

Friday 18th November 2016

Huddersfield Town manager David Wagner has seen his side concede eight goals in their last two away matches, six of those coming from set pieces.

So it was no surprise to see the former Borussia Dortmund coach field questions about Cardiff City's threat from dead ball situations as he pits himself against Neil Warnock for the second time as Terriers boss.

Despite a recent blip, the German has led Huddersfield to 3rd in the Championship. Yet he admitted the league continued to throw up new challenges, with Warnock's direct approach another hurdle to overcome on Saturday.

"I met him (Warnock) last season away at Rotherham, we played a game where we drew," Wagner told BBC Leeds. "It was a game where there were lots of one-against-one challenges, the ball was often in the air rather than on the pitch, so there are things we expect when we play a Neil Warnock team.

"There are no secrets. We know what to expect from our opponent on Saturday."

It was no so much a sideswipe at Cardiff's style under Warnock — disciplined, well-drilled and direct — more an honest admission from Wagner as his stylish Huddersfield try to get back on the promotion trail.

The Terriers have employed a bold counter-pressing system this season which has borne fruit in spectacular fashion. The Bluebirds, meanwhile, have taken a more pragmatic approach since Warnock's appointment , with substance prioritised over style — for now at least.

And though 18 places in the division separate the two sides, there is no chance of Wagner taking the Bluebirds lightly at Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

"They have their own style, their identity and we have to think about what we have to do," he added. "We're in a position in the table where we can have self belief but in our last two away goals we conceded eight goals — six of them from set pieces.

"Our first target is a clean sheet on Saturday and then I'm sure that, on our offensive side of the game, we'll create some opportunities and hopefully be clinical."

With Peter Whittingham set to return to the Cardiff City starting lineup after featuring from the bench in the Bluebirds' last match at Newcastle. Wagner is wary of the Englishman's threat from dead ball situations.

"Nearly every Championship club has an expert in delivering set pieces and they (Cardiff) have that in Whittingham," he said.

"We have to make sure we make no stupid sloppy mistakes to give away set pieces too easily. If we are good in defending set pieces on Saturday, we'll take a big step in the right direction.

Wagner also revealed his own admiration for Warnock, as a big 'character' in the game and hoped to share a cup of tea with the veteran boss after the final whistle.

Huddersfield boss David Wagner
"We only spoke a few sentences before and after the game (at Rotherham) but to be fair I didn't go to the manager's office after the game - I don't know why," Wagner added.

"It's nice for me to come into contact with different characters and he is certainly character in British football. If we win I will come to his manager's office and knock on his door!"

Huddersfield's Harry Bunn is out with a hamstring injury, while on-loan Manchester City midfield star Aaron Mooy will be assessed on Saturday morning after returning from Australian international duty. Striker Nakhi Wells is also due to return.

Huddersfield midfielder Aaron Mooy has no fitness issues but will be assessed by head coach David Wagner after returning from international duty with Australia.

Mooy played the full 90 minutes in Australia's 2-2 draw in Thailand on Tuesday, but is expected to be available.

Fellow midfielder Kasey Palmer will also be monitored after he was forced out of the recent home draw against Birmingham due to a hip injury, while striker Nahki Wells is expected to recover from illness.

Forward Harry Bunn is hoping to return to contention after missing out against Birmingham due to a hamstring strain.

Neil Warnock's Cardiff City start a daunting run of fixtures this afternoon as David Wagner's Huddersfield Town make the trip to South Wales.

The Terriers have won only one of their last five games but have been one of the league's most exciting sides and still sit third in the table.

Cardiff are unlikely to make big changes from the side which lost narrowly to Newcastle United, with Matt Connolly and Jazz Richards still not fit for first team action.

Peter Whittingham could be set for a recall in midfield after coming off the bench and scoring last time out.

Chelsea loanee Kasey Palmer is a doubt for the visitors but they will still have plenty of attacking threat. Attacking midfielder Harry Bunn is definitely ruled out.

The Bluebirds desperately need to improve their home form after being desperately disappointing at the Cardiff City Stadium so far this season.
