That southern Irish player who scored the winner.

This should clear things up. Pretty sure most Irish feel the same way.

People say I am being disrespectful but don’t ask why I choose not to wear it. If the poppy was simply about World War One and Two victims alone, I'd wear it without a problem.

I would wear it every day of the year if that was the thing but it doesn't. It stands for all the conflicts that Britain has been involved in. Because of the history where I come from in Derry, I cannot wear something that represents that.

I think you need to read the facts on why the player did what he did and also read up on the historic role of some southern Irish and WWI, fella. Equally, from his perspective, the role of the British Army in Northern Ireland for so many years

Rightly or wrongly, many (like him) held/hold a position that differs to the rest of the UK

I might not agree with his/their stance, but it is their history and their prerogative given opposing the view they had of events!

He always gets slagged off for it but it's a personal decision and a respectable one, I don't see why you HAVE to wear one.

He's from Derry, surely you can understand why he doesn't want to wear one? The poppy remembers every war/conflict Britain has been involved in, not just the world wars. If it was just the world wars, McLean has said that he wouldn't have a problem with it.
