Carlisle were beaten for the first time this season as bottom of the table Newport shocked them at Rodney Parade.

Newport County 2 Carlisle 0

Josh Sheehan's early strike and a smart finish from Rhys Healey after a second half counter-attack secured the win for Graham Westley's side.

Carlisle's had been on a winning run of eight successive games, while the Exiles are now unbeaten in five.

Newport remain bottom of League Two but are now a point behind Leyton Orient while Keith Curle's side remain second.

Newport manager Graham Westley told BBC Radio Wales Sport: "The players have worked so hard and they looked the real deal in League Two today.

"We are an improving team and the players deserve enormous credit."

Newport end Carlisle run thanks to on loan Cardiff City striker Healey.

Carlisle suffered their first league defeat of the season after they were shocked 2-0 at League Two strugglers Newport.

Keith Curle's team entered the game as the only Football League side who had not lost this season but goals from Josh Sheehan and Rhys Healey put an end to that run.

Swansea loanee Sheehan opened the scoring with a drilled strike just two minutes in after Carlisle failed to clear Jazzi Barnum-Bobb's low cross.

County then sat back as Carlisle pushed for an immediate reply, with Macauley Gillesphey blasting a shot wide before Jabo Ibehre volleyed over the crossbar.
After the interval, the Cumbrian outfit grew frustrated as they failed to penetrate a resurgent County wall.

Their woes were capped off in the 72nd minute when Dan Butler collected Josh O'Hanlon's clearance and the defender teed up Healey, who coolly slotted the ball past Mark Gillespie into the bottom left corner.

The result gives Graham Westley's side their first successive league wins since February following their 3-1 triumph at Accrington Stanley a fortnight ago.

Big jump between league 2 and Championship but I do agree that we may as well give him a go - we'll never find out otherwise

We gave Zahore a go. Healey must be a better striker than Zahore.

Now and again someone submits a post which is just impossible to make an argument against. The above is a classic example :notworthy:

You say that but he's been nowhere near the first team and he's currently on loan at league 2. We've all witnessed first hand the gulf between the Leagues of the lower divisions and our last 3 managers haven't picked him. Maybe/hopefully he'll come through this/next year under Warnock who knows , but saying 'throw him in he can't be any worse' is a bit silly really. There's a process in place to evaluate these players.

Magners point was Healey is better than Zohore. Whatever Healey's chances of first team football are he just has to be a better player than Zohore who is simply a shit striker.

Having said that Cameron Jerome broke through 10 years ago having only played in youth/reserve team football. Rob Earnshaw also made the step up after going on loan to Berwick Rangers of all places. Stepping up can prove a problem for some players but as history shows it is not an absolute barrier.
