' Cardiff Should Sign this player in January? '

Opinions?

Cardiff City had a disastrous summer and an even more disastrous start to the season under Paul Trollope.

This has been evidenced by their upturn in form since Neil Warnock took over and by the fact that Warnock immediately snapped up four free agents (Kieran Richardson, Sol Bamba, Junior Hoilett and Marouane Chamakh) in a bid to improve his squad.

If there was one part of the transfer window which Cardiff fans will be furious about the most, it will be the situation with goalkeepers.

The Bluebirds have been lucky over the past few seasons to be blessed with a goalkeeper of David Marshall’s quality and to have Simon Moore as back-up when he is clearly good enough to be starting for most Championship sides.

To lose both of them towards the end of the transfer window was inexplicable, especially considering that a suitable replacement was not brought in.

David Marshall left to join Premier League Hull right before the deadline shortly after Simon Moore was bizarrely allowed to drop down a league to join promotion hopefuls Sheffield United.

Both are top class goalkeepers at Championship level and they were replaced with Ben Amos, who is quite frankly sub-standard for this level.

Neil Warnock knows that this is not acceptable and he will undoubtedly be dipping into the transfer market to strengthen his resources in the goalkeeping department.

And he needn’t look further than fellow Championship side Newcastle for his man.

Rob Elliot is a more than capable goalkeeper, especially at this level and has excelled in the Premier League when he had to cover for the injured Tim Krul.

Newcastle, however, see Karl Darlow as their first choice and Matz Sels as their back-up choice with Elliot paying the price for being injured in pre-season.

Tim Krul will also return next year from his loan at Ajax and promising young star Freddie Woodman looks set to be competing for a spot within the next couple of years.

This means that Elliot’s future with the Magpies looks bleak and he needs to leave to get playing time at such an important stage of his career.

The 30-year-old is a big commanding goalkeeper but he is also very athletic and has proven this on many occasions for both Charlton and Newcastle.

The Republic of Ireland international would be the perfect addition to Warnock’s Cardiff side as they need a goalkeeper and he needs a club to give him some game time.

It could be a match made in heaven with all parties satisfied and Elliot could go on to have a successful career at Cardiff for many years to come.

We need a goal scoring forward more than a keeper.
