Peter Whittingham has been shortlisted for the Championship PFA Fans' player of the month for October.

The Cardiff midfield maestro has enjoyed a stellar month, as his performances have gone from strength to strength with the arrival of new manager Neil Warnock.

Whittingham played five times in October and scored twice at Cardiff City Stadium in six days.

His penalty against Bristol City handed the Bluebirds a huge win in their first match under Warnock, and he followed it up with a superb free-kick against Sheffield Wednesday as Cardiff went three matches unbeaten in the middle of October.

'Whitts' has started every match for the Bluebirds in October and along side Aron Gunnarsson has shored up the midfield under Warnock.

The award is voted for by fans and Sky Sports will announce the winner tomorrow.

There are five men shortlisted alongside Whittingham, including Newcastle strike Dwight Gayle who Whittingham could line up against on Saturday.

Gayle scored four goals in four matches during October as Newcastle have stretched their lead at the top of the Championship table to three points with a 100% record in October.

The forward was replaced in the starting XI by Aleksandar Mitrovic after picking up an injury and now faces a fight to win his place back ahead of the visit of Cardiff City.

The other players shortlisted are Gary Hooper, Massimo Luongo, Paul Gallagher and Sam Baldock.

The panel includes Sky Sports pundits Paul Merson, Ian Holloway and Peter Beagrie, as well as former referee Mike Riley and Football Supporters Federation chairman Malcolm Clarke.

Whittingham still has plenty to offer this team imo and sometimes gets stick when it is unwarranted, he has been a great servant to the club and I think many won't really appreciate his worth to the team until he has left.

I watch football to see footballers. If I want to see people running around getting "stuck in" i'll go to the Arms Park.

Class player.

I'm genuinely shocked. How on earth could he be in front of Gunnarsson and Bamba?

Whittingham is still a fantastic player and as a poster said, would be immediately missed. His abilities far outweigh any 'limitations', same as Marshall, pure class.

Still one of the best players in the division for me.. Committed, hard working and can thread the ball through the eye of a needle. Not the fastest guy in the world but never has been blessed with pace.

9yrs I think he's been with the City now and having spoken to him on several occasions he has always been happy here, and will happily stay here as long as he is wanted.

True legend, top bloke, awesome left boot
