Was an extension ever considered for Ninian Park?

Or where we always going to move to a new stadium?

I'm sure it was looked into but the problem was that NP was quite tightly enclosed on all sides and there was no room to expand.

Both the Grange End and Canton Stand had houses almost directly behind them, the Bob Bank had the railway behind it and of course Sloper Road was directly behind the Grandstand so there was virtually nowhere on which to extend the old ground.

If the club wanted to increase the capacity available to them they really had no choice other than to move from NP, much as many of us would have loved to remain there.

Still pissed off by that final game "celebration" though.

Wasn't moving all part of Sams great plan and without it would Tan ever have got involved?

Yes there was and we could of held 28,000 capacity, but we never had the money.

Annis.

Where do you get that idea from?

There is no way Ninian Park could have been extended to a 28,000 all seater stadium.

It would have cost more to repair/extend Ninian park than to build the ccs, so didn't make economic sense,no idea if 28,000 capacity is right, but the way football is now,you need a bigger capacity to have a successful club, long term that is any how

28,000 figure is nowhere near right.Virtually no room to expand the stadium, and site would have been licenced for only 14,000 seats even after the huge amount of money needed to bring it up to an acceptable standard of repair had been expended.

New stadium had the land gifted to it for free for several initial years and even now a low rent has to be paid under the head lease to Cardiff Council as freeholders. The Council as freeholders of the Ninian Park land also allowed the club to keep over £7m of the proceeds of sale of Ninian Park to put towards the new stadium build costs
