'A WIGAN FANS VIEW '

We spoke to life-long Latics supporter Tom Horn ahead of Cardiff City’s clash with Wigan Athletic this weekend.

Wigan make the trip to South Wales having only won once in their last 10 games, a run of form which lead to the dismissal of manager Gary Caldwell earlier this week.

Meanwhile, Neil Warnock’s men will be looking to pick up all three points after the 2-1 victory against Nottingham Forest last time out. The Bluebirds have now taken seven points from a possible nine since Warnock’s arrival earlier this month.

Tom talked us through what life is like back in the Championship after Wigan’s one year absence:

Both Cardiff and Wigan haven’t had the greatest start to the season, how do you think your season will pan out?

It’s been a difficult start – Many of our key players have failed to adapt to the championship and have also failed to find the form from the league one promotion season.

It’s hard to say how it’ll turn out now after we’ve recently just sacked Gary Caldwell. I think we’ll probably be in the relegation battle, but our squad is definitely capable of staying up providing we bring in the right manager.

Will Grigg is your current top goal scorer this season, is he the player Cardiff fans should be fearing the most?

He’s definitely the most likely Latics player to score a goal for us. Although, the one you’d probably fear most is Yanic Wildschut our left winger – On his day he’ll beat any full back in the division.

Former Cardiff manager, Malky Mackay managed you during the 2014-15 season, what was your view on him?

Mackay was definitely a key reason in why we went down. Although he took over under pretty bad circumstances and sold the majority of our Premier League team in that January window.

I think most Wigan fans would see him as one of our worst ever managers and rightly so, his win percentage was something around the 15% mark and the football was dreadful at the best of times. His sacking was a very popular decision among fans.

Gary Caldwell was relieved of his duties on Tuesday, how much will that set you back going into the game this weekend?

I’m unsure if we’ll have a manager in place by Saturday, so it remains to be seen if we’ll be set back by the sacking in terms of Saturday, although our away record is terrible anyway.

It probably was the right decision but it’s disappointing that it hasn’t worked out for Gary Caldwell, tactically he appeared out of his depth at championship level and his insistence on a possession based game was massive a contributor to his downfall.

There’s an argument that he should have been given more time, but things weren’t improving at all.

Cardiff have taken seven points from a possible nine under Neil Warnock, how do you see this game panning out?

It’s hard to say as I have no idea who our manager will be on Saturday. If I’m honest I can see you beating us. Warnock appears to have you guys well organised and I think you’ll eventually finish mid-table. Our away form is poor so I’ll go 2-1 Cardiff.

Interesting to read that it was Caldwell's 'insistence on a possession based game' which led to his downfall. This sounds very similar to Trollope. It's all very well wanting to play Barca style but you have to have the players to do it, and the championship is one of the hardest leagues to play in that style.

Problem is Trollope become obsessed with the idea of possession stats, sometimes it is good to have the ball it's just what you do with it.. there was points in games with Trollope where we overplayed it and didn't shoot from outside the box enough.
