A crowd of just 4,782 watch Cardiff's FA Cup Third Round defeat to Shrewsbury Town in January.

The Championship remains one of Europe's most popular, fiercely competitive leagues, with recent attendance figures showing more people watch the English second tier than Serie A.

And since the relegation of fallen giants Newcastle United and Aston Villa from the Premier League, attendances have been ever higher this season.

But for Cardiff City, after a stuttering start , it's been a different story. The Bluebirds' days of attracting 25,000 for a home game are seemingly dead and gone.

Save for the 22,776 who saw Neil Warnock's first game in charge against Bristol City , it's been 15,000 or 16,000 through the gates at Cardiff City Stadium this season. And the club's league position of 20th tells you why. The Bluebirds fans may come flocking back if Warnock is able to engineer a play-off push this season.

But it's Rafa Benitez's high-flying Geordies who are the expected leaders on the pitch this season. And they're topping the charts off it as well in terms of numbers through the turnstiles.

There are a few surprises with struggling Derby County and Aston Villa commanding excellent crowds despite mixed results, while Burton are the side punching most above their weight.

Here is the definitive list of average attendances in the Championship so far this season. Scroll down to find out where Cardiff rank.

Some big clubs in that top 8 all with sustained success in the top flight, considering our position in the Division about right, it will only increase under Warnock.

I agree that if Warnock can continue the good work, and there is a long way to go, the attendances will improve :bluescarf:

The Top 16 on this list are as big or bigger than the bottom 13 in the Premiership.Only the current top 7 in the Premiership have never been relegated ,the rest are just hoping to get 40 points to stay up?

Unfortunately none of that is true...

Only Bournemouth have averaged under 20k this season. And Manchester City for one were in the third division not that long ago.

Having said that, there are clearly clubs in the championship that would pull in a lot more fans if they went up (Leeds, QPR Blackburn...)

You can't compare Premiership attendances with Championship attendances? We had 28k sell outs in Premiership before our increased capacity stadium and had the 13th Highest attendance in the Premiership that season?

The Bluebirds' attendances have been a concern in the past couple of seasons since the club's relegation to the Championship

BY DOMINIC BOOTH (Media Wales)

Thousands may have flocked to Cardiff City Stadium for Neil Warnock's first game in charge — that epic Severnside derby victory over Bristol City — yet attendances remain a concern for club officials.

New figures reveal Cardiff's average attendance this season stands at around 16,400, despite Cardiff City Stadium's 33,280 capacity.

Gareth, both small clubs regarding crowds, Blackburn in the 80's would bring 50 fans max to Cardiff City.

I agree, apples and oranges. If it happened again our floater fans who come to maybe two or three a season will become season ticket holders. Our actual fan base is huge, it's just most these days rarely attend or don't attend often. That's not a dig at them, it's their choice but thousands lay dormant and will appear again if fortunes on the pitch appeal again.

Make no mistake a resurgence under Warnock should it continue will add numbers gradually but the floater will only take notice when a match to put them in a play off spot should happen, if that does happen of course. In the premiership city would sell out most games.

As I always thought .most clubs attendances increase between 30-50%when they go up to the premier league even Leeds big club Utd.the loyalist clubs in the country in my opinion Norwich and Pompey.they re attendance doesn't vary much regardless of league position.
