Bristol City 1974: Where was your most intimidating walk?

Tue Oct 25, 2016 6:47 pm

Bristol City 1974,got arrested on arrival at the train station, for knicking a bog roll from the train, was taken to the police station had name taken ,etc and released after about an hour. meand two of my mates then had to make our way to the ground on our own.we were 14 years old and had minimum of three blue and white scarfes on each ,never entered our minds to take them off.temple meads to ashton gate past the cannals is a long walk and by feck we had some stick.but never got beaten up think we were too young probably one of the most intimadating walks to an away ground though i was very young.

Where's the most intimadting walk youve ever had ?

Went with a mate to see Southampton vs Liverpool at The Dell, early 80's. In the Liverpool end and kept in. Long walk back to the station and just a few coppers. Ambushed by Saints fans. Some scousers went toe to toe fair play but I wasn't about to fight for a team I didn't support and ended up running and hiding in a carpet shop! Some Saints even came into the shop but fortunately didn't see me hiding behind a big carpet roll!! Me and my mate escaped without a scratch.

Millwall in the 70s without a doubt.

Millwall in the 80s at night games scary shit. But my worst experience was Northhampton in the late 80s turning a corner to get back to our car to be confronted by a 100 strong mob of lads. Our car was on the other side of them lol and not a copper in sight.

Lincoln in the late 80s
I lived in Leicester and had to walk to the station on my own.
Given the eye by loads of group hanging around so I brought a load of shopping and walked past with two bags full making out I hadn't been to the football at all.

Millwall by a million miles no-one does intimidating more than them it really was like transporting yourself to another universe walking through Bermondsey in the 70's & 80's. Belfast is the only other place I can think of in the UK which gave the same dark frightening feel once you got there.

Going slightly off topic in 2004 I went to Portugal for the Euros (booked when I thought Wales couldn't possibly have f**ked it up  ) and there were England fans everywhere on the Algarve. Me and a mate went into a bar wearing our CCFC hats and got a number of funny looks but no trouble.

Sat on his own was this fella who had a bald head jeans doc martins Nazi tattoos and braces with a face with looked as though a grenade had exploded in front of it at sometime. He was a Millwall fan and it was clear all the other England fans were happy to give him a very wide birth. As soon as we walked in he latched on straight away. We spent a very enjoyable couple of hours listening to his stories and receiving praise for being Cardiff fans (apparently we are the only club they consider to have 'real' fans :? ). He had no respect for fans of other clubs and said it out loud. Despite there being supporters from those clubs in the bar no-one dared challenge him. Just about sums up the standard Lion hooligan totally mental.

Early 70s walking from the back of Woolies on the old Kent road all the way to the old Den without one copper in sight. And it had already gone off mentally with two stabbing that day. Also Spurs was always interesting as well.
Also 2004 walking back into Edinburgh city centre shadowed by a huge mob of Hibs after City,s pre season unfriendly at Easter Road where about 25 of us had been attacked by Hibs main mob of about 50 lads outside one of their pubs. Hibs could not move City to their annoyance :bluebird:

Millwall for sure. As soon as you set foot on Bermondsey station it was squeeky bum time. Most London firms were incredibly game but the wall were a different league.
Travelled there by coach as well and it got attacked, some wall fans seemed quite happy to stand and trade blows with the coach itself.....scary times but good times.

Believe it or not tranmere away!cant remember the year(earnie got a hatrick)a Friday night game.20/30 of us in the boozer before the game then tranmere (and allegedly) Everton turned up 200 handed,Luckily for us the old bill were on hand to save us a good hiding, got to the ground safely(just) then afterwards was just as bad 100s of them shadowing our escort and mingling in with us dishing out slaps left right and centre all the way back to the train station! To top off a bad night at the office we got back to Liverpool lime street and the first boozer we dived in(think it was called the crown)had 70 Everton lads in resulting in another few injuries to our already pissed off crew!! :ayatollah:

Anyone remember Maine Road? That whole area is the worst I have ever been to and the roughest most downtrodden place in the country. There were smackheads everywhere, I can handle shitholes but Moss Side was more than a shithole, it stank of desperation, quite sad really.

Was with the legend from cwmbran we went to sarfeeend. The game was live on sky. We went the night before, West ham were mouching around big style. We met up with around 10 other city fans on the sea front. We expected a few more city on that night so we were told. Just a crazy weekend a few scuffles the night before the game.

I was at that one. A night game I think, and I went on the 'special' train and came outside with a nice welcoming party. It was running battles on the way to the ground, a mate of mine ended up on his backside (he was ok) but our lot on the train held our own all the way.

At the ground, City and Leeds pitch invasion and fighting ensued around the goal posts - another mate of mine got arrested on the pitch for fighting.

I went back by coach with guys I knew - but I heard city fans didn't group together after the game going back to the station and got basically picked off.

Millwall in the 70's was another interesting experience. I've had many adrenaline rushes :laughing6:

First ever away game I went in the train to Orient on my own without a clue what I was doing looking back, think it was 1988.
Lots in the train so I tagged along but somehow got attacked in a carriage full of Chelsea at Newport and had to jump off moving train. Ended up getting to Paddington late, orient even later only to be met by about 100 really pissed off looking West Ham fans at orient station. There was only 6 of us and I probably wouldn't be here today if they hadn't been in the other platform, still, all sorts rained down as we all performed Olympic style sprint to get to the ground. A pitch invasion by city fans chasing the West Ham out, stabbing after the game, don't think 16 year old goat was ever so happy to land back at Cardiff central..... :bluescarf:

New Cross Gate tube to the, (old), Den in the 70s. Unlike anything I gave ever experienced before, or since. Didn't relax until changing tube trains at Whitechapel, and heading back to Paddington.

Ajax v Rangers, went looking for my mate, couldn't find him and started walking back to hotel through a deserted part of the city, pubs were all shut and it was very quiet. About 50 Ajax fans came round the corner, some had Celtic tops on and many had their scarfs over their faces, I absolutely shat it and as I walked through them I was looking for an escape over the barges on the canal. None of them said a word to me. Looking back I was wearing a CK collarless shirt so maybe I looked like a local and that's why they didn't fill me in.

The Leeds fa cup game was on a saturday, i went up with a load of my mates from Cwmbran on one of the four special trains we had, the pitch invasion/fighting was at half time and after the game brave Leeds fans were picking off the tail end of city fans on the way back to the station. I think we lost 4-1.

Millwall FA Cup I think 80's when they became first all ticket games, me and Westy slipped the escort and went for a burger, few of their lads asking when are the rest of train mob arriving etc.....fair play to them they just said have a good day lads, probably cos we were about 16 at the time. Made way our way to ground with no tickets, gave the old 'Ive lost my ticket' to the OB and he said no problem you can watch the game on a mound outside the ground where you can see half the pitch. I looked over and quite a few of theirs had same idea so I said no thanks. Got in half time, 0-0 i think, but remember OB unleashing dogs into that shitty away end, and not nice I know, but dogs were getting kicked to fucked and OB dragging them back out. Helicopters and dark when game finished, nasty evil atmosphere with about only 4-5000 there - an eye opener that was :o :o

West Ham away drew 1-1 Ray Bishop scored. Don't think there was a window left on the coach when we got back to the coaches after the walk from the ground to the coach park.
