THE WARRIOR THAT WAS NOT WANTED BY SLADE OR TROLLOPE, YET IS BECOMING ONE OF WARNOCKS MAIN PLAYERS

Iceland warrior Aron Gunnarsson is now showing his Euro 2016 form for Cardiff City — to the delight of Neil Warnock

By Chris Wathan

Thursday 20th October 2016

Neil Warnock is determined to turn Aron Gunnarsson into his Viking warrior, after insisting the Bluebirds are now starting to see his Euro 2016 form at Cardiff City.

Gunnarsson, a key man in the 2013 promotion team, has struggled to make an impact in South Wales in recent seasons with his form often flattering to deceive.

It has seen him kept on the fringes of the regular starting XI at times under both Russell Slade and Paul Trollope.

Yet while the 27-year-old was underwhelming in South Wales, he has remained a hero in his homeland.

Captain of his native Iceland, the midfielder looked a different player as the heartbeat of Lars Lagerback's side that stunned Europe with a run to the Euro 2016 quarter-finals, sensationally shocking England along the way.

The performances did not pass new Bluebirds boss Warnock by , the wily manager noticing how the make-up of the Iceland side suited his style down to the ground.

And Warnock believes Gunnarsson is now starting to show his form for his country back at his club under his watchful eye, revealing how he put illness aside to register another impressive showing against Sheffield Wednesday.

Gunnarsson was a determined force against the Owls having looked like a player re-born in Warnock's winning bow against Bristol City.

And the Cardiff chief said: “In fairness to him, tonight after 70 minutes, we were going to make another substitution. Gunnarsson didn't feel very well at all, he was coming off, after 65 minutes he said give me ten more.

“Then (Joe) Bennett felt his thigh and we didn't have a clue what we were doing if I'm honest. Stuart O'Keefe was up and down about 10 times before he came on.

“But Gunnars came back strong again to play on and he's getting better and fitter. He can play an important part with us like he does with his country.

“I think if I managed an international team Iceland would suit me. He plays for me like he does for Iceland, and they didn't do a bad job on England, did they?

“I think he needs to play in that sort of environment, really, nothing fancy, play his own game. He's as good as anyone when does that.

“He was breathing through his backside at times tonight but he'll feel better for it.”

The arrival of Warnock just proves what shit management that we had over the last 3 years
He believes in playing to a players strengths and and playing a system that revolves around the players strengths
As he said you don't play the passing game if half your team can't pass
What I like about him is that he doesn't believe in complicating things when just basic football will work
It's just nice to have a manager who knows what he is doing and always thanks his players if they put a shift i
Long may it continue and just maybe a play off place this season
