Forest Team news

The injury curse struck once again on Tuesday night. Just when Nottingham Forest should have been buoyed by the return of Britt Assombalonga, midfielders David Vaughan and Mustapha Carayol limped off down the touchline against Blackburn Rovers.

The duo however, do have a chance of being fit to face Cardiff City on Saturday, with head coach Philippe Montanier saying, "we will see tomorrow".

However, Pajtim Kasami and Nicolao Dumitru will be ready to step into the starting XI at the City Ground if necessary.

There will definitely be changes in defence, with Matt Mills and Hildeberto Pereira both suspended – the former having picked up his fifth booking of the season at Ewood Park and his team-mate being sent off late on.

Centre-back Michael Mancienne could, though, be a contender for a place in the squad; Montanier saying he is "close to returning" from a muscle injury.

Front man Assombalonga will be on the bench again, having played the final 15 minutes against Blackburn. The Reds striker made his comeback after being out for two months with hamstring and calf problems, but is not yet fit enough to start a game.

Key facts

Club: Nottingham Forest FC
Opening: 1898
Capacity: 30,576 seats

History and description

Nottingham Forest moved to the City Ground in 1898 after unsuccessfully trying to find a permanent home in previous decades.

The City Ground officially opened on the 3rd of September 1898. It was initially a rather small ground consisting of mainly wooden stands.

Some improvements were made in the following decades, mainly in expanding the terraces, but the ground only really started to develop from the 1950s. The first was a new East Stand (later Executive Stand), which opened in 1957.

The opening match of the new East Stand also meant a new record attendance for the City Ground. A total of 49,946 people saw Forest play Manchester United that day.

In 1962, a fire heavily damaged the wooden main stand, but it was successfully restored. Six years later, another fire completely destroyed the same stand, which was subsequently rebuilt. The stadium could at that time hold about 43,000 people, of which 17,500 seated.

The successes of the Brian Clough era made further developments possible, resulting in the construction of the large Executive Stand in 1980. The Executive Stand got later renamed Brian Clough Stand in honour of Forest’s most successful manager.

Developments continued in the early 1990s with the construction of a new all-seater stand at the Bridgford End and in 1994 with the new Trent End at the other end of the ground.

The City Ground was one of the playing venues of the 1996 European Championships, during which it hosted three first-round group matches.

In recent years, the club has investigated the possibilities of building a new stadium. These at one time became rather concrete as part of the England 2018 World Cup bid, but the failed bid and recurring resident opposition at proposed sites have thus far halted any progress.

Who plays for Nottingham Forest against Cardiff City?

Nottingham Post

Thursday 20th October 2016

David Vaughan went off injured on Tuesday night

Head coach Philippe Montanier faces a selection headache as his Nottingham Forest side look to put Tuesday's defeat to Blackburn Rovers out of their minds when they take on Cardiff City this weekend.

The Reds went into the midweek game with much promise after a fine win over Birmingham City last Friday, but that hope evaporated inside 10 minutes, when Sam Gallagher netted the first of his brace to sink lacklustre Forest.

And for Montanier, who will be without the suspended Matt Mills and Hildeberto Pereira, the problems have mounted. David Vaughan and Mustapha Carayol both went off injured at Ewood Park, joining Nicklas Bendtner in the treatment room, and look likely to be missing for the clash against the Bluebirds.

Cardiff meanwhile, have enjoyed something of a lift since Neil Warnock was appointed last week, beating Bristol City and drawing 1-1 with Sheffield Wednesday.

But the South Wales outfit remain in the bottom three as they travel to Nottingham to face Forest in the live televised game on Saturday evening.

Cardiff City have Good record away at the City Ground

Cardiff have a very impressive record at the City Ground in recent years with three of the last four visits resulting in the Bluebirds returning to Wales with 3 points.

Cardiff’s visit last season saw Kenwyn Jones and Joe Mason, both having moved from Cardiff since, put Cardiff 2 up, before Michail Antonio pulled a goal back late on, to secure Russell Slade’s first away win as Cardiff boss.

It was a similar story when the Bluebirds paid Forest a visit back in 2015 when Cardiff, thanks to goals by Joe Ralls and Eoin Doyle ensured that a late Forest goal was just a consolation. Taking into account these scorelines, Cardiff fans, it would seem, can carry much optimism heading into the game and don’t be surprised by a 1-2 score-line.

' Great Start '

Cardiff are carrying momentum under new boss Neil Warnock. Four points from a possible six is a great start and Warnock will want this to continue for some time.

Naturally, Warnock was disappointed with the goal conceded against Sheffield Wednesday on Wednesday evening, and will look to build on that performance. The Bluebirds are starting to show character in order to hang onto points; vital for any club in the Championship.

This has been displayed in order to ensure 3 points against Bristol and to prevent Warnock’s first loss against Sheffield Wednesday, even showing a late surge of attacks to try and get the win, something not seen at Cardiff for a while.

Good balance of experience

Especially with the new additions that Neil Warnock has made to the side, Cardiff have a good amount of experience. Lambert, Hoilett and Bamba have stacks of Championship experience between them, with Lambert knowing exactly what it takes to achieve the dream of promotion with Southampton.

Who could forget the veteran Peter Whittingham too? Two goals in two games under Warnock is demonstrative of the value he holds in the Cardiff team.

However, this experience is balanced with younger and more energetic players too, with the likes of Joe Ralls and Kadeem Harris. Harris is bound to get a chance under Warnock as the hectic Christmas fixtures loom ever closer and he will become a player of key importance to Cardiff’s attack when played.

Neil Warnock on Rickie Lambert and his fitness

Friday 21st October 2016

Warnock: "We’re trying to get more balls to Lambert, but we’re playing really good games. We’ve had as many, if not more chances than our opponents, everybody would like to create more but where we are in the table, we have to graft first. Fluency and goals comes from confidence."

"I don’t think he could have played 3 90 minutes, I’d like to play another one in there, so it’s a hard job for Rickie. With the teams we’re playing though we can’t conceded the midfield area. The goals against column was ridiculous so we have to work it."

Problems are mounting for Nottingham Forest head coach Philippe Montanier ahead of the visit of Cardiff.

Hildeberto Pereira is suspended after his red card in the defeat to Blackburn while fellow defender Matt Mills must also serve a one-match ban after he received his fifth yellow card of the season at Ewood Park.

Midfielders David Vaughan and Mustapha Carayol went off injured during the 2-1 loss against Rovers in midweek, joining striker Nicklas Bendtner in the treatment room, and they look likely to miss out on Saturday evening.

Daniel Pinillos has resumed training and is making good progress in his recovery from a knee injury and the defender is close to being back in contention but Matty Fryatt (Achilles) is still out.

Cardiff manager Neil Warnock, who missed out on the Forest job in the summer, has revealed he has "a couple of problems" regarding injuries but has refused to specify who is affected.

Because of the evening kick-off, Warnock intends to travel to Forest first before making a decision on the players carrying knocks.

Former England international Kieran Richardson may make his debut after being an unused substitute against Sheffield Wednesday in midweek.

Another new signing, Marouane Chamakh, made his first appearance off the bench against the Owls and could push for a starting spot.

I must admit I don't like Connolly as a right back.
He started there for us a few times in the opening games of our Premier League season and didn't know where he was. He was there when we played a 3 at the back, but he always seems more comfortable in the middle and a bit stiff and less mobile as a full back. I hope he only makes challenges outside the box too.

C'mon City!
