Bamba offers great cause for optimism

Sol Bamba's offering here was notably unspectacular in comparison to his all-action, full blooded performance against Bristol City.

Whereas in the Severnside derby he had clearly been running on supreme adrenaline, here he was far more reserved and composed.

In many ways, that was even more encouraging than his debut performance.

At his former clubs he has always been a cult hero for his occasionally herculean displays; but occasional lapses of concentration have cost him dear.

Tonight, with the tempo of the game a lot slower, and the atmosphere far more becalmed, his concentration was excellent and he mopped up with no fuss. You sense it these kind of matches in the past where the urge to make something happen has been his undoing.

That is hugely reassuring and suggests he is responding to Warnock's tutelage.
