Cardiff City v Sheffield Wednesday

"Trust statement on Aberfan Disaster commemoration

Trust chair Keith Morgan has made the following statement ahead of next week’s 50th anniversary of the Aberfan Disaster in which 116 children and 28 adults died in the 1966 tip slide.

Keith Morgan said: “Following discussions with Cardiff City Football Club, the Trust is pleased to announce that the club will be marking the 50th anniversary of the tragic events of the Aberfan disaster of October 21, 1966 with appropriate pre-match commemorations which will include a one minute silence before kick-off.

The Trust asks all fans to try and ensure that they are in their seats in sufficient time to allow this silence to be honoured as best possible. Our thoughts go out to all those whose lives were changed forever by the tragic events of that day.”

I believe this refers to tomorrow's game.

there was a post last week from someone slagging the club off for not doing anything to remember the disaster, though the poster didn't actually have any knowledge to share - I wanted to make sure that people were aware that they - WE - are doing something, and a minute's silence is the most appropriate gesture.

I've been watching the programs on TV with tears in my eyes, them poor children and adults who perrised in the disaster, and the community having to cope.

The miners, fire brigade, rescue service, and community talking about it, and you just know a day don't go by where they don't think about it, the burden its carried on them all.

Such a sad day for the world.

I hope the people who go tomorrow get to their seats early and take part in the minutes silence. It was 50 years ago that the people of Aberfan lost a generation, killing 116 children and 28 adults on that awful morning of the 21st October 1966. It should never be forgotten and may they rest in peace.

Aberfan

Such a terrible tragedy.
A tragedy that should have been avoided and a community devastated.
Even after those were laid to rest the village had to fight for justice.

We should never forget

Surviving Aberfan: 50 year anniversary of disaster

Tuesday 17 October 2016

Fifty years ago 116 children and 28 adults were killed by a roaring avalanche of coal waste in the mining village of Aberfan.
Coal waste dumped in huge tips on the mountain above the village started to cascade down, becoming an unstoppable and deadly force.
It crashed into Pant Glas Junior School and houses directly below the tips, causing death and destruction.
Emergency services had a race against time to rescue survivors buried alive.
They were joined by local miners and people from the village in the painstaking process of searching for those engulfed in the slurry, before they suffocated or were drowned by water released from a broken water main damaged in the avalanche.
Survivors of the disaster on 21 October 1966 have spoken about their experiences that day, and how it changed them and their village forever.

Excellent gesture.
Please remember during the silence that the people of Aberfan had to pay to move those tips from above the village with money from the appeal fund. Just think if the people of Liverpool were asked to pay for the repair of Leppings Lane after Hillborough! : :x
And we still kowtow to the English. What will it take to make us angry?
