We take a look at all the statistics from the Bristol City win and compare them to the best and worst of the league.
This was Neil Warnock’s first game, and he wanted to make a big impression. He did exactly that as Cardiff won by two goals to one thanks to goals from a Peter Whittingham penalty and new signing Sol Bamba. Astonishingly they were the first two goals scored by Cardiff players at the Cardiff City stadium this season.
It was a complete contrast in performance from previous weeks, especially in defence as Lee Peltier and Sol Bamba ran the show.
Lee Peltier won two tackles, won 100% of his aerial duels. He also intercepted the ball five times and made one critical block. As for Sol Bamba, a Man of the Match display as he won three tackles, intercepted the ball six times, came in for two vital blocks and came up with the telling goal – via @ccfcstats.
It was clear that the Neil Warnock effect was full in gear as their percentage of shots on target under Warnock was up in terms of percentages of Paul Trollope’s twelve game tenure at the club.
Under Trollope in the twelve games he was in charge of a club, Cardiff had a shot of target percentage of 28.36%. In Warnock’s first game it was 33.33%.
Despite this keeping the ball still appears to be an issue as Cardiff’s ball possession was just 39%. It was also a very feisty affair, with seven yellow cards in total.
It was very tight in terms of total shots with 12 for Cardiff and 11 shots for Bristol City, the difference is Cardiff have had four shots on target compared to Bristol City’s one attempt on target.
Cardiff’s form this season has been somewhat poor and they are currently 15th in the form table. Norwich lead the table, with Rotherham sitting at the bottom. Cardiff have the 22nd worst attack and defence in the league. They have scored just 10 goals, and let conceded 20.
That compared with Newcastle and Huddersfield, the best attacks and defences in the league is quite staggering. Newcastle boast the best attack, and have scored 25 goals so far this season, with Dwight Gayle being their top scorer on nine.
He is the top scorer in the Championship, there is a significant difference compared to Cardiff’s top scorer who is Anthony Pilkington, who has scored just three.
Huddersfield boast the best defence in the league – having conceded just eight goals. They’ve also kept three clean sheets this season so far.
Despite conceding just eight goals, this shows they do have a tendency to let in goals by game. Brighton currently have the best record in terms of clean sheets, with seven.
An excellent statistic considering this is only game week twelve. Cardiff have kept just one clean sheet and this is something that Warnock needs to stress to his players has to change and quickly.
