Cardiff City are still THIRD favourites to be relegated despite appointing Neil Warnock as their new manager

The Bluebirds are still being tipped for the drop after such a poor start to the 2016/17 season.

Cardiff City fans can be forgiven for enjoying a renewed sense of optimism following the appointment of Neil Warnock as their new boss.

The survival specialist has won seven promotions during his time as a manager and has been brought in to the Cardiff City Stadium to rescue the club from their alarming slide down the table.

New boss Warnock has wasted no time in bolstering his squad ahead of the Severnside derby match with Bristol City on Friday night - with Sol Bamba and Junior Hoilett both joining the club this week.

And Warnock is also expecting to complete deals to sign former Arsenal striker Marouane Chamakh and ex-England international Kieran Richardson this week .

But Sky Bet are still tipping the Bluebirds for the drop after making such a disastrous start under former manager Paul Trollope who was sacked after winning just two of his 11 league matches in charge.

Here we look at what the bookies think about Cardiff City's hopes for the season...

" To be relegated (9/4) "

After such a disappointing start, it's easy to see why Cardiff are being tipped to go down.

The club have only won twice in the league while Trollope failed to see any of his own players score a goal at the Cardiff City Stadium during his brief stint in the managerial hotseat.

Only Warnock's former side Rotherham and Blackburn Rovers are worse off with the bookies - with Cardiff being the third favourites to be relegated.

At 1/4, Rotherham are massive favourites to go down while Rovers are 11/10 to be relegated.

Burton (3/1), Wigan Athletic (100/30) and Preston North End (9/2) are also in the mix at the bottom of the table.

" To stay up (4/11) "

With Warnock at the helm, fans have been unusually optimistic after such disappointing spells under Trollope and Russell Slade.

And Sky Bet are offering odds of 4/11 for the Bluebirds to avoid the drop - with Rotherham and Blackburn again being tipped to struggle.

Warnock lost only four of his 16 games in charge of Rotherham as he kept the club in the division last season - and the Cardiff City faithful are confident he will work his magic in South Wales.

Be good if this happens but for now cash thrown at the team sensibly has to be priority.

Not surprised to be honest. Until we start showing signs that we can recover and avoid relegation then we'll remain unfancied.

Hardly surprising. Largely the same squad to work with, and the same squad which are currently 23rd on merit. I don't believe we will go down, but I think those who have predicted that we can somehow threaten the promotion race have got themselves a little over excited with the appointment of Warnock. If a couple of our new recruits work for us, I think we can finish around mid table, or possibly just below. That would'nt be a bad outcome considering where we are right now.

The aims under Warnock IMO are several fold;

1.To get out of the bottom 3 and inch up the table towards the safety net of 50 points
2. To get the players playing with more commitment and enthusiasm
3. To play more attacking football, with more tempo and cohesion
4. To give the fans something to get excited and enthused about [after 3 years of torrid football]
5. To get the missing 000's back
