Bristol City

Full name: Bristol City Football Club
Nickname(s): The Robins
Founded: 1894 as Bristol South End
Ground: Ashton Gate Stadium
Capacity: 27,000
Owner: Stephen Lansdown
Head coach: Lee Johnson
League: Championship

Bristol City Football Club is a professional association football club based in Bristol, England. Their ground is Ashton Gate, located in the southwest of the city. They currently play in the Championship after winning League One during the 2014–15 season. In sealing the League One title, Bristol City became only the second team to win both the third-tier championship and Football League Trophy double during the same season.

Bristol City won the Welsh Cup – despite being an English club – in 1934. In 1907 they finished runners-up in Football League Division One, which is their highest ever final position. In 1909 they lost the FA Cup final to Manchester United, their only final. Since relegation in 1911, however, they only returned to the top division from 1976 to 1980 and did not contend for any honours then. In 1982, Bristol City became the first English club to suffer three consecutive relegations. They were promoted to the Football League Championship in the 2006–07 season after finishing second in League One but failed to make a second consecutive promotion to the Premier League after they were defeated by Hull City in the 2008 Football League Championship play-off Final at Wembley Stadium. With victories in 1986, 2003 and 2015, Bristol City are now the most successful team in the Football League Trophy.[1]

The club's nickname is "The Robins", and a robin featured on the club's badge from 1976 to 1994. Official club merchandise, including replica kits, still has a label showing a robin. An attempt by the club to alter the badge was abandoned after it was criticised fiercely by fans.[2] The team's main rivals are Bristol Rovers in the Bristol derby and Cardiff City in the Severnside derby, along with other regional teams in the West Country derby.

Bristol City's current manager is Lee Johnson; a former Bristol City player who made 199 appearances for the club. Coincidentally, he is the son of former City manager Gary Johnson, who took City to the Championship play-off final in 2008, where they eventually lost 0–1 to Hull City.

Warnock and Lee Johnson have got little history, between them self. Warnock blasted him when he was at Rotherham. Lee told his players to dont fear them, and Warnock told his players play ugly, and break someone leg.

Meet the red-hot Bristol City and England Under-21s striker Neil Warnock described as 'the steal of the century'

Tuesday 11th October 2016

BY DOMINIC BOOTH

Cardiff City face the free-scoring 19-year-old in Friday night's Severnside derby

It's been quite a season for Bristol City's Tammy Abraham.

The 19-year-old Chelsea loanee is setting the early pace this season in more ways than one. He is the Championship top scorer after bagging eight goals in 10 league starts to propel to Robins into the play-off places.

His performances have even caught the eye of interim England Under-21s boss Aidy Boothroyd, who handed Abraham a debut in Kazakhstan at the weekend.

And the striker, who only turned 19 on Sunday marked his full Under-21s' debut with a goal for the young Lions against Bosnia-Herzegovina at Walsall's Bescot Stadium.

Cardiff City and their new boss Neil Warnock will have one eye on events in the west midlands, as they seek a way of nullifying the threat posed by Abraham ahead of Friday's Severnside Derby in the Welsh capital.

Whether the new Bluebirds boss opts to field his own secret weapon -- newly signed centre back Sol Bamba -- in an effort to negate Abraham remains to be seen, but the wiry Robins' striker has the pace to worry any defence and the composure to finish from close range.

Warnock himself described Bristol City's summer business -- selling French forward Jonathan Kodjia to Aston Villa for £15million and bringing in Abraham as a loan replacement -- as the 'steal of the century'.

Stopping Abraham will be paramount in Warnock's thoughts as the 67-year-old begins his pre-match preparation ahead of Friday's titanic clash.

"To pick up someone who scores 11 goals by the end of September on a free and then sell another forward for £15m has to be great business," said Warnock.

"I've seen what he (Abraham) has been doing, and it looks like the steal of the century to me."

"Bristol City have signed some really good players and it will be a tough game for us.

"They are scoring goals, winning games and the boy Abraham has been exceptional."

Abraham and United starlet Rashford are just three weeks apart in age and Boothroyd was delighted to draft the Robins striker into his squad when Rashford was called up by England manager.

"I will have no hesitation in starting him and it’s great to have Tammy after losing Marcus," he said. "It just seems whatever he touches, goes in.

"It’s great for Bristol City, great for Chelsea and really good for England because he is playing at a good level."

The Robins have won their last three matches, which included a 4-0 rout of Fulham that saw Abraham open the scoring inside 10 minutes. He is well supported in the Bristol lineup by former Bournemouth forward Lee Tomlin and the experienced Aaron Wilbraham.

It's been a busy week since Neil Warnock was first unveiled as Cardiff City manager.

Warnock has added Sol Bamba, Junior Hoilett and Marouane Chamakh to his ranks amid rumours he may also be looking to add former Manchester United man Kieran Richardson.

Warnock is likely to update us on that situation and give an update on whether the three new signings are ready for action.

The Bluebirds take on Bristol City on Friday night in a mouth-watering Severnside derby match at Cardiff City Stadium.

Kieran Richardson admits he 'can't wait to get started' after joining Cardiff City on a short-term deal until January.
Richardson, who was a free agent after being released by Aston Villa in the summer, becomes Neil Warnock's fourth signing since he took charge earlier this month.
The former Manchester United player is the latest to join the Bluebirds following the arrival of Sol Bamba, Junior Hoilett and Marouane Chamakh.

Richardson could make his debut when Cardiff host Bristol City on Friday night at Cardiff City Stadium.
Warnock believes the 31-year-old, who had been training with Cardiff, has the experience to help the club out of the rut it currently finds itself in.
He said: 'Kieran is another experienced player who has committed to us until January - and as I see it that is a no lose situation.
'He's a quality player, established at top level and can contribute towards us moving up the table.'
