Georgia
FIFA history
A FIFA member since 1992, Georgia have yet to reach the finals of a FIFA competition in any age group. Last in their South Africa 2010 qualification group, they fared slightly better in the Brazil 2014 campaign, beating Belarus and recording two draws, one of them a creditable goalless stalemate with France.
The team
The European qualifying competition for Brazil 2014 was the swansong for a group of distinguished veterans led by Levan Kobiashvili. With the Jvarosnebi now in a transitional phase, the time has come for their young talents, among them Genk midfielder Tornike Okriashvili, to build on their performances in the last preliminaries and lead the way forward.
The coach
Slovakian coach Vladimir Weiss took the reigns from Georgian Kakhaber Tskhadadze in 2016. Father of former Manchester City winger, who is also named Vladimir Weiss, is best known for taking Slovakia to the 2010 FIFA World Cup knockout rounds as Group F runners-up following a 3-2 victory over defending world champions Italy. Slovakia then lost 2-1 to the Netherlands in the Round of 16. The former Czechoslovakia midfielder also led Slovakian side Artmedia Petrzalka to the UEFA Champions League in 2005/06 and had spells in Russia and Kazakhstan.
The stat
10 - The number of goals Georgia conceded in eight matches in the last world finals qualifiers, an indication of their defensive solidity. The Georgians managed only three goals at the other end, however, a statistic they will need to improve on if they are to make any headway against their rivals for places at Russia 2018.
The former stars
Shota Arveladze, Levan Kobiashvili, Alexander Iashvili, Kakha Kaladze
Wales
FIFA World Cup finals history
Wales have only appeared at the finals once, in 1958 when they were led by the great John Charles. They reached the quarter-finals after a 2-1 win over returning runners-up Hungary, with a solitary Pele goal then sending them home. They have struggled in qualifying since, coming close in bids to reach 1982 and 1986 but lost out to Czechoslovakia and Scotland respectively on goal difference.
The team
Not lacking in individual talent, The Dragons are blessed with the likes of Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey, while Joe Ledley and Joe Allen help make up a dynamic midfield. Behind them, the likes of English Premier League regulars Ben Davies, James Collins and captain Ashley Williams feature in a solid backline.
The coach
Though still a manager in the early stages of his coaching career, aged 44, Chris Coleman already has 12 years’ experience in the hot seat. Since taking charge of the nation he represented 36 times as a player in 2012, there have been promising signs that they could make their return to the World Cup.
The stat
35 – The number of days after Gareth Bale's 17th birthday when he became Wales' youngest-ever goal-scorer.
The former stars
John Charles, Ian Rush, Gary Speed, Ryan Giggs, Ivor Allchurch, Neville Southall
