' Top Championship Manager Sacked '

Mon Oct 03, 2016 8:29 am

Aston Villa Football Club has today parted company with manager Roberto Di Matteo.

Monday 3rd October 2016

The Club decided to act following a run of disappointing results which has the left the team occupying 19th position in the Championship.

The Club would like to place on record its appreciation to Roberto for all his efforts in helping rebuild the squad and wish him well for the future.

Steve Clarke will take over as caretaker manager during the search for a new manager.

There will be no further comment from the Club.

Bbc website reporting a statement

Fans booing them at last game

'Once you lose the fans,
There's no way back'

What a difference between the two clubs actions

A club the size of Aston Villa with its proud history had no choice what so ever but to let him go. You can't have a team like Villa floundering in 19th position in the lower leagues, they need to be pushing to get back with the big successful clubs to the PL. they should bring in someone like Nigel Pearson who will really shake up the dressing room. At least after 12 games they have been pro active. They realise leavebit another three or four games and only pick up a point or two and they will be in a very bad dog fight against relegation all season, at least this way they have given themselves a better than fighting chance, and will keep their litL fans on side :bluebird:

Can remember Villa in division 3 in the early 70s.

I'm not sure Roberto Di Matteo was the right choice in the first place. As a previous poster mentioned, I think they needed a strong figure like Nigel Pearson. They have completely overhauled their squad over the summer and now they are surprised they are taking time to gel. What else did they expect? Aston Villa are going to need 2-3 seasons to re-structure. There is not an immediate cure for them.

The same goes for us. We need a strong character who won't take any shit. The only trouble is that the unholy trinity of Sun Tan, Choo Choo Train, and 101 Dalmantions hate the idea of someone coming in who has their own mind. That's the problem.

So can I, I can also remember them wining the European Cup in front of 50,000 odd fans :bluebird:

Villa have acted pretty decisively. Obviously something is wrong and he won't be the last championship manager to be shown the door this season

Villa are a massive club with a proud history. European Cup winners, League titles and until fairly recently the record number of FA Cup wins

They've had a few turbulent times but their support always stayed with them...until now. Seems football supporters across the board are reacting negatively to the 'money men' culture that is turning Football League into an effectively franchising system that only concerns itself with the money

The sad thing is that the divide has never been greater and fans have never been more inclined to vote with their feet when their so-called beloved team is not performing. The opposite, of course, is true when their team is doing well and our own 'fans' proved that beyond any doubt when we were having our moment in the Premier League sun a couple of short years ago; even with us playing in the red!

The modern game and its fans demand a level of success and if that is the case then other 'issues' become less important (yes, even the red) whilst we are riding on the crest of a wave

But the times they are a-changing and as one wag recently put it, "Well, they don't come and see me when I'm bad, do they?"

As a time-served die-hard Cardiff City fan it's not what I want to hear but it is increasingly understandable given what else is out there to occupy the time (and money) of the younger generation! :ayatollah:

The difference being that they have plenty of money for a replacement! You pay peanuts and you get monkeys so perhaps its the organ grinder thats at fault and not the monkey! :digging2:

He was awful. You can talk about bad luck but his tactics were poor. Don't know how he expected to effectively play four strikers and get away with it. They were playing Ayew on the wing to accommodate McCormack and Gestede up front. Grealish normally played on the other wing but I think one game all three of those played, plus Kodjia on the other wing.

I can remember we beat them 4-0 at NP to help send them down. Think Toshack & Bird got a couple each.
