Nigel Clough wants Ben Turner and Burton Albion to make their bookings count

Saturday 1st October 2016

Ex Cardiff City defender Ben Turner has already been booked six times this season for Burton Albion

Nigel Clough wants Ben Turner and his Burton Albion teammates to make their bookings count. Centre-back Turner - who is in line to face former club Cardiff City in Saturday's Pirelli Stadium clash (3pm) - has already served a one-game suspension this season for picking up five yellow cards.

Ben Turner has been booked in his last four games for Burton Albion

In total, he has accumulated six from eight Championship games after being booked in the midweek draw with Queen's Park Rangers. The 28-year-old was arguably fortunate not to see a second yellow in the QPR clash after bringing down Massimo Luongo as he made a run down the right wing in the second half.

And ahead of the Cardiff clash, Albion boss Clough is warning his side not to pick up needless yellow cards in the first place, putting them under pressure for the remainder of the game. "We (spoke to Turner) straight after the game and said he'd only just come back from suspension," said Clough - Turner missed the Brighton game because of that ban.

"It's a daft booking - the same as Tom Flanagan's first one on Saturday (against Norwich City). As soon as you get a yellow card, you're open to anything daft happening. Flanagan was sent off for the handball at Norwich and Ben Turner could've been sent off for a tackle down the side as well.

"Some referees would have given him a second yellow, so you have to be careful with the first one. Make them count, as well. We will have to, at times, make fouls, so don't get booked for silly things. Half of his bookings have been soft ones. Six in eight or nine games is far too many."
