Matt Connolly

No great loss, truly a liability in a team blessed with many this season, how long is his ban, two games, hopefully they lose an appeal and he gets three.

Straight red is 3 isn't it?

Thought there was a new rule where if a penalty is given then you can only get a yellow?

Depends on the nature of the offence.

We'll win any appeal, ref got it wrong.

Makes no differnce to today though, penalty was right decision and we could have waited a year for us to score.

Only penalty decision with a red card is for dangerous play, which this was not, it should have been a yellow, if a player was going for goal and was fouled outside the box it is a red. The rule was brought in not to penalize the defending team twice, once for the penalty and secondly for a red card. One rule that should not have been changed

Exactly what I said earlier, Blackman just cut across Connolly and caught him. Connolly didn't even stick out a leg to put a challenge in. Definite penalty as Connolly accidentally caught him and he was through on goal, but never a red card under the current rules this season. We should appeal.

"When a denial of a goalscoring opportunity offence is committed by a defender in the penalty area, the penalty kick effectively restores the goalscoring opportunity so the punishment for the player should be less strong (e.g. a yellow card) than when the offence is committed outside the penalty area. However, when the offence is handball or clearly not a genuine attempt to play or challenge for the ball, the player will be sent off."

Connolly has been truly shocking this season.

Penalties given away, a red card, mistakes leading to goals.

No wonder Trollope is picking him so regularly.

If it's an accidental foul (e.g. a mistimed tackle/genuine attempt to win the ball) then it's a yellow card.

If it's deemed a purposeful foul (e.g. cynical trip or deliberate handball) to deny a goal scoring opportunity, it's a red.

Pretty simple to understand really. The ref got it right.

How do you make that out with the rules you just quoted? It was clearly an accidental trip...

I'm not convinced he was off the field of play when the kick was taken tbh however a red card was the correct sanction.
