' CARDIFF CITY TEN DAMNING STATISTICS '

The full horror of Cardiff City's terrible start to the season in 10 damning statistics

Tuesday 20th September 2016

BY DOMINIC BOOTH

They're averaging just 2.3 shots on target per game in front of their own fans at Cardiff City Stadium
That's the lowest of any team in the league

These numbers reflect just how badly the Bluebirds have fared under Paul Trollope this season

Saturday's 2-0 defeat to Leeds United saw another chapter unfold in the disastrous story that is Cardiff City's start to the season.

It's four defeats on the bounce now for Paul Trollope's men and it's not just bad luck which is plaguing the Bluebirds. Serious shortcomings up front have left Cardiff toothless going forward and confusion over the formation has left big gaps in defence.

1. They're averaging just 2.3 shots on target per game in front of their own fans at Cardiff City Stadium
That's the lowest of any team in the league

2. They're struggling to find the net, scoring 0.75 goals per game - and conceding 1.75
Only Derby County have scored fewer goals than Cardiff

3. Top-scorer Anthony Pilkington (2 goals) has had just 10 shots on target in eight games

4. Peter Whittingham has enjoyed ONLY ONE shot on target this season

5. And Whittingham has a success rate of 33 per cent with his crosses

6. The Bluebirds have conceded two penalties... and haven't won one for themselves

7. Indiscipline - 10 Cardiff players have been shown yellow cards this season

8. More indiscipline - and the Bluebirds have been caught offside 28 times in the current campaign

9. Cardiff's pass completion rate is just 73 per cent - way below the likes of Huddersfield (79 per cent) and Newcastle (81 per cent)
Only six teams have a worse pass completion rate

10. They're toothless from set-pieces... no goals from free kicks yet this season

There are some fans still in denial. I posted on a thread after the Leeds game entitled " I'm Positive After Today" highlighting that Rob Greene was a mere spectator in goal and could have gone to sleep. However some thought that Greene had loads of saves to make including tipping a flying header onto the post.

In fact Morrisons header hit the inside of the list and then ended up hitting Greenes hand as he was diving towards the post. I cannot recall Greene having to make another decent save throughout the game. Even the BBC stats show that we only had two attempts on target and the header that came back off the post must have counted for one because I cannot remember two others.

It is pointless passing backwards and sideways in your own half if you don't get anywhere and our only threat was from set pieces. Only to have two efforts on goal in 90 mins isn't good enough. Earlier in the season our only effort on target in one of the matches was in the 94th minute!

Presumably confidence is low and it seems that many of the players do not want to take responsibility of having a go. Things will have to change otherwise no efforts means no goals which means no wins which means relegation. Need more pace & creativity in the team.

Cardiff need to do one thing...

STOP changing every game.

This will give the players consistently and a chance to work towards some sort of plan.

I hope we turn things around soon.

Yes we need more pace and creativity i agree. The midfield is an issue for me aswell with picking the right players out wide. We need to pick and instruct 2 of the midfield players to move the ball forward and support in attack instead of just passing it backwards and sideways like you say. Also pace out wide is needed bring in kadeem and kennedy
