Cardiff City: Mehmet Dalman denies coach Paul Trollope is 'cheap option'

Dalman promising him full control of the first team and funds to bolster his squad.




Chairman Mehmet Dalman says Paul Trollope is not a "cheap option" to succeed Russell Slade as Cardiff boss.

The promotion of Trollope, 43, was confirmed on Wednesday with Dalman promising him full control of the first team and funds to bolster his squad.

Trollope worked as Slade's assistant from February 2015 and has been told the Bluebirds hierarchy expect a top six finish.

"It is not us taking the cheap option," Dalman told BBC Radio Wales Sport.

"It could turn out to be a very expensive option."

Slade has taken up a new role as head of football, in which he will oversee scouting, among other duties.

Trollope will not report to Slade, and has already started to change his backroom staff with coach Scott Young being moved from first team duties.

Dalman believes Trollope's appointment underlines Cardiff's commitment to stability and has explained the club will allow the former Bristol Rovers manager to be his own man.

"We have [had] stability over the last 18 months. The team is not far off, let's be honest about that," he said.

Cardiff City chief executive Ken Choo says the club will consider "big" offers for senior players in August.

But he added the club will strive to keep Scotland goalkeeper David Marshall and defender Bruno Ecuele Manga.

Choo confirmed there had been interest in players the club wants to sell, but warned fans to be patient over new arrivals.

"We could see a lot of movement in the last week of August, when the transfer window is about to close," said Choo.

Cardiff face Birmingham City on Saturday in their first Championship game since the appointment of new head coach Paul Trollope.

But Choo said the team could change considerably before the summer transfer window closes on 31 August.

"Everything is still up in the air," said Choo.

"We have a few targets to go but it really depends on players leaving as well, players who we feel should move on."

Not really because he was sticking in a lot of money beforehand. He's now given the club a budget that should allow us to survive in this division, it's up to the managers and players to ensure that happens.

It's pretty obvious they are well involved in the making of the decisions. To the detriment of the team maybe but Ken Choo has done a very good job of getting this club to start living within its means. Maybe it's not what the fans want but after complaining about Tan increasing the debt then those people can't have it both ways.
