Newport County 2-2 Cheltenham match report: Jon Parkin brace salvages point

Monday 12th September 2016

Ex Cardiff City striker Jon Parkin levelled twice as Newport pegged back Cheltenham

A brace from Jon Parkin saw Newport County twice come from behind to earn a point at home to Cheltenham Town.

The visitors broke the deadlock on 11 minutes when midfielder Asa Hall produced a beautiful curling effort into the bottom corner of Joe Day’s net from 25 yards out.

Parkin levelled from close range seven minutes later after the Cheltenham defence failed to deal with a corner.

But the Robins were ahead again on 34 minutes thanks to an inspired run from Harry Pell.

The midfielder picked up the ball on the edge of his own box and galloped the length of the pitch, breezing past Dan Butler with ease, before being halted in the area by a clumsy challenge from Paul Bignot.

Referee Carl Boyeson pointed to the spot and Danny Wright sent Day the wrong way with the penalty.

Warren Feeney’s men refused to lie down, however, and they were back on level terms within three minutes thanks to Parkin again.

Left-back Butler produced a tempting cross from deep and the man they call The Beast used all his strength and experience to ensure he was on the end of it to volley in at the far post.

Newport: Day; Butler, Bennett, Turley, Bignot; Compton (Jackson, 63), Labadie, Randall (Tozer, 85), Grego-Cox; Rigg, Parkin (Healey, 80)
