Preston North End Football Club (often shortened to PNE) is a professional association football club located in the Deepdale area of Preston, Lancashire. They play in the Championship, the second tier of the English football league system.

The club was a founding member of the Football League and completed the inaugural season unbeaten to become the first league champions, in the same season winning the FA Cup without conceding a goal to become the first club to achieve the English football "Double". Preston's unbeaten League and Cup season earned them the nickname "The Invincibles".

Preston's most recent major trophy success was their FA Cup victory over Huddersfield Town in 1938. Many notable players have played for the club, including Tom Finney, Bill Shankly, Tommy Docherty, Alan Kelly, Sr. and Graham Alexander.

Based on results achieved in the Football League from 1888–89 to 2015–16, Preston were ranked as the fourth most-successful English football club of all time domestically, while only Notts County had played more Football League games than Preston

Deepdale

Image

Initially part of Deepdale Farm, the sport field was first leased in 1875 for cricket and rugby, while football games were first staged in 1878 (first Preston North End league fixture in 1888). Soon afterwards the very first stand was created in the west, initially with tent serving as changing rooms for players.

Attendances growing beyond the 10,000-mark forced the stadium’s expansion both in the west and north in 1920s, while new Town End, built in 1928, was consumed by fire after just 5 years. That’s why the new east side, Pavilion Stand, opened in 1934 and standing until early twenty-first century allowed larger crowds to gather.

Record games for Preston North End were seen in 1930s, with the Arsenal classic in 1938 being watched by over 42,000 people. However, in the case of Deepdale, it wasn’t always the men on top (so to speak) – ladies’ football proved very more popular here and the Dick, Kerr’s Ladies FC is said to have drawn crowds of over 50,000 for their games, though their record 53,000 was set in Goodison Park.

After the tragedies of late 1980s, decision was made to redevelop the stadium. Inspired by Italy’s Stadio Luigi Ferraris, works started in 1994 and saw the new west stand open in 1995, north end in 1997 and south end in 2001. Only the east side remained untouched until 2006, when it was closed for redevelopment and reopened in 2008, setting capacity at 23,404.

In 2001-2010 the National Football Museum was housed at Deepdale, home stadium of one of the Football League’s founder clubs. The museum was later relocated to Manchester.

Preston North End Vs Cardiff City: Match Preview

Date and Time: Tuesday 13th September (19.45)

Venue: Deepdale

Referee: Stephen Martin

Cardiff City make the long trip North to face Preston North End at Deepdale on Tuesday evening for matchday seven.

Paul Trollope’s men travel to Deepdale to face a struggling Preston North End side on Tuesday evening as they look to improve on their worst start to a season for 11 years. Cardiff will be hoping they can make-up for last time out when they were beaten against Norwich City at Carrow Road.

Preston have also struggled in the early stages of this season with just one win to-date and that single victory coming against QPR at Loftus Road. The single win is accompanied by five losses with the most recent, a loss at home to Barnsley.

Despite the concerning start to the season, manager Simon Grayson has urged his players not to panic as they head further into the season. The Lilywhites were hoping to build on last season’s respectable top-half finish but it hasn’t gone to plan yet.

The two teams couldn’t be separated the last time they met at Deepdale with a goalless draw devoid of entertainment. Cardiff won the last meeting between the two with a 2-1 win at the Cardiff City Stadium with Anthony Pilkington scoring the winner.

Team News

Cardiff will have a mostly fit squad to pick from for the trip to Preston with only Sean Morrison picking up a knock from their last clash, against Norwich City. Peter Whittingham should now be fit to starts after strating on the bench last time out.

Winger Anthony Pilkington has scored Cardiff's last three league goals, including a brace at Carrow Road.

Daniel Johnson could be in contention for a Preston place

Simon Grayson may consider changes to Preston's starting line-up against Cardiff after a fifth league loss of the season at the weekend.

Grayson was encouraged by the performance in a 2-1 reverse to Barnsley, but knows the Lilywhites must start to pick up points having won just one of their opening six contests, so Daniel Johnson, Ben Pringle and Jordan Hugill will all be thought about.

Bailey Wright has been struggling with a toe injury which caused him to miss international duty with Australia, while Jermaine Beckford is still a little way off with a hamstring strain.

Ones to Watch

Preston North End - Eoin Doyle

Doyle has two goals in six appearances this season after making his switch permanent in the summer. Both goals, however, have come in the EFL Cup against Hartlepool and Oldham. With Jermaine Beckford out for a 'number of months', Simon Grayson will be looking to Doyle to cement his place and start scoring regular league goals.

Cardiff City- Aron Gunnarsson

The 3-2 defeat to Norwich City was bitterly disappointing but Gunnarsson was one of the positives with by far his best performance so far this season. A relentless bundle of energy, he went from box-to-box for ninety minutes and constantly disrupted the rhythm of Norwich's midfield. His long-throws were a big threat and Lambert almost benefited from his delivery on a couple of occasion.

What both managers have said before tonights Preston v Cardiff City game

' SIMON GRAYSON '

Simon Grayson : “We can't feel sorry for ourselves, we have to be ready to go again.

“Whoever saw the second-half performance on Saturday [Preston lost 2-1 to Barnsley] would have realised that we weren't the team which should have lost the game.

“But for the odd mistake and not being ruthless enough in taking our chances, we would have won.

“The players are hurting because they want to get the right results.

“We are not a million miles away, so it is difficult to take for everyone.”

' PAUL TROLLOPE '

Paul Trollope was left frustrated again at Norwich City

Paul Trollope : “I don’t want it (play well and not win) to be a pattern that’s emerging. We can say the same from a few of the games that we’ve played.

“That’s the message to the players. We are still putting building blocks in place about how we play and what we’re trying to do. Having Rickie Lambert at the top of the team helped in a number of ways. He was a handful and probably should have got a goal or two. But there were large positives to take.

“Sometimes as a manager or a coach, saying there’s lots of positives to take in a defeat is an easy thing to do and sometimes you get hammered for it. But I believe in what we’re doing and how we’re working.”

Opposition ones to watch: Preston North End

By Tom Prosser

Tuesday 13th September 2016

After making a slow start to the season Preston made three signings in the closing days of the transfer window in a bid to kick-start their season.

Cardiff drew 0-0 at Deepdale last season and We take a look at the Preston players that Cardiff will be looking to get the better of in their bid to take all three points this time around.

Anders Lindegaard

The former Man United Goalkeeper signed a one year contract with Preston this summer following his release from West Brom at the end of the season. The Danish Keeper joined Preston on loan from the Baggies in January 2016 and played against Cardiff at the Cardiff City Stadium in the Bluebirds 2-1 victory.

Lindegaard spent five years at Old Trafford but only made 19 appearances for Man United during this spell. He is now Preston’s first choice keeper and is playing regularly again for the first time since he left Danish club Aalesund in 2010.

Bailey Wright

The 24-year-old has been the mainstay of the Preston defence over the last few seasons since making his first team debut in 2010. Wright has gone on to make nearly 200 appearances for Preston and is vastly experienced at football league level despite only being 24.

Wright played a starring role at the back for Preston as they earned promotion to the Championship from League One in 2014/15. He held his own in his first season in the Championship last season and will look to continue his development this season.m

He was included in the Australia squad for the 2014 World Cup and has gone on to win 12 caps for his country.

Paul Gallagher

Gallagher joined Preston on a permanent basis from Leicester last summer and is a very forward thinking midfielder. The 32-year-old is a set piece specialist and is known for being a threat from free kicks.

Gallagher impressed during two loan spells at Deepdale in League one and was a key part of the side that won promotion to the Championship. Gallagher scored five goals in 41 Championship appearances last season and has one Scotland cap to his name.

Jermaine Beckford

The Striker struggled with injury last season and was certainly a big miss for Preston in their return to the Championship. Beckford is a typical goal scorer that has a good strikers instinct and will score goals at any level.

He was restricted to just 10 appearances last season and scored two goals. Beckford scored a hat trick for Preston against Swindon in the 2014/15 League one playoff final against Swindon and will be dangerous if he is back to full fitness and form.

Star Man- Aidan McGeady

McGeady joined Preston on loan from Everton on the day before deadline day. The 30-year-old has the ability to be a real force in the Championship and would add a lot to any squad in the division.

He Struggled to get into the Everton side last season and was sent on loan to Sheffield Wednesday on deadline day of the January transfer window and featured 13 times for the Owls scoring one goal.

The 85 times capped Republic of Ireland international is capable of causing Cardiff problems on his day and will certainly add experience and quality to the Preston side.
