Will Rickie Lambert answer Cardiff's goalscoring problems?
Rickie Lambert was a deadline day signing which inspired Cardiff fans after a mass exodus of strikers who departed the club at the start of this calendar year.
With experience throughout in the Football League, Rickie Lambert looks to be the answer to Cardiff’s goalscoring worries.
Lambert’s stature is one which may fit the philosophy Cardiff are trying to play, with the two wing-backs looking to attack for Lambert to score using with his aerial threat.
What Lambert also posseses, is a powerful shot and he’s used that to his advantage, scoring numerous free-kicks during his time at Southampton. He has also never missed a penalty in a competitive game, which gives Cardiff competition when it comes to set pieces between Peter Whittingham and Lambert.
Unfortunately for Lambert, he has gone through a dry patch since his dream move to Liverpool, with just 3 goals in 44 league fixtures with his boyhood club and then West Bromwich Albion.
It was during his five seasons at Southampton he really showed his goalscoring prowess, with 106 goals in 207 league appearances. This would be from League One all the way to the Premier League, where he would always score more than ten goals a season.
Compare that to last season where Cardiff’s top goalscorer was a makeshift striker in Anthony Pilkington on 9 goals, then the season before where Kenwyne Jones registered 11 goals in the league.
Whilst Lambert can be seen as a cure to Cardiff’s goalscoring worries, there is also a worry Cardiff may become too reliant on the new man and if he were to suffer an injury, then Cardiff would be back at square one in terms of finding a main source of goals. So a Plan B may need to be in place if Lambert cannot play week in week out, which is a very real possibility with his age.
Cardiff’s reliance on an experienced striker paid off when they earned promotion in 2012/2013 but it was a mere 9 goals Heidar Helguson would go on to score, in his only year of service.
With Lambert previously working with head coach Paul Trollope, it can certainly be passed as a Paul Trollope signing rather than a signing made by the board, this gives Trollope backing from the board and signifies to the media, and indeed fans, that he can be trusted in the transfer market.
The arrival of Lambert may be one which can inspire the current crop of players, with his positive influence he shared at Southampton. He was a main figure point in their promotion and was a key factor in where they are now.
He has kept himself in shape which will allow him to buy in to what the fans, want which is a hard working striker who will play for the shirt.
In his first and only time he played in the Championship, he registered 27 goals in 42 appearances for Southampton which included a penalty against his current side, he finished top scorer of the league as Southampton went on to promotion. This is a sign he is more than capable of scoring in this division and that Cardiff may have finally found a striker the Cardiff fans can chant about week-in week-out as he delivers the goals.
