Much better than Cardiff, first time flying from here, also they have CCFC home and away shirts for sale in departures.

Cardiff Airport is nice providing you don't need to fly anywhere. It's a bit like a vegetarian burger van!!

Cardiff Airport I'm afraid is a massive joke, compared to the forward thinking Bristol airport. 1.5 million people with Welsh address,s traveled from Bristol last year, Cardiff airport should be ashamed of themselves. And as an extra inventive you get the full range of Cardiff City kits at Bristol airport :bluebird:

its a shame that cardiff airport doesnt sort its act out cos it loses out on so much by being so over priced,my flights for the wales v georgia game would have cost me 140 into cardiff and i got it for 55 into bristol and then the bus is 16 into cardiff, joke!!

Years ago when the place was a small local airport it flew mostly 2 and 4 seater planes privately owned or owned by the local flying club, with the odd Cambrian Airways passenger planesusing it as well. It appears to be going back to those days, and I can't see how it can survive as a regional airport for much longer.
It would be my preferred airport to fly from, but unfortunately they either don't fly to the destination I regularly travel to, and on the odd occasion I am going somewhere different, it is nearly always cheaper to go from Bristol. Use to fly from Cardiff regularly years back, but can't remember the last time I used it now.

Steve, sadly I think you are correct. I know a few (somewhat) senior staff in different departments at CWL and most of those are unhappy with the way things appear to be going

Like you, I flew frequently form CWL a few years back (including to Florida) and it was much more convenient than a trip to Gatwick, Birmingham, Manchester or Bristol

They are renowned for being overpriced (although I seem to remember a thread on here disputing that not so long ago) and it has to be seen as crazy when Bristol offer the same destinations often for less than half the price!

Multiply that by the number of travellers in your group and it soon adds up to a tidy sum!

Will be five trips this year for me come Chrimbo (including four long haul) and not one from CWL. I know others in the same position

Not good for us, not good for CWL and (at current rate) it won't be good for Wales itself!

Between 2010 and 2014 I travelled a fair bit between Cardiff and Rome, 48 return flights in total. Flew with KLM, via Amsterdam. Must say, that I found Cardiff Airport to be very good.

cardiff is having a record year this year and growing with more routes planned for next year bristol is nearly full to capacity so things will get better for Cardiff in the next few years

And how many times over how many years have I heard that. Yet still more and more people are flying from Bristol, and still they don't fly to the destination that I and thousands of other Brits fly to each year.

I'm one of the lucky ones never had to use Bristol used roose twice already this year ! And if went to USA use air lingus easier than going to London , only been once to bristol (dropping off) and check in area is as small as Roose , Bristol will get full and cannot expand so in future there's room for Roose to expand routes bmi already back and more people using it this year and last, it's not all gloom and doom as being portrade by some :old:

Tried about 5 or 6 times over the years to fly KLM and NorthWest to get to my destination. Unfortunately, changing in Amsterdam, then again in Minneapolis or Detoit, not always getting the connections because of delays en route, put as much as 7 hours onto the usual travel time. Also cost me quite a bit more than flying direct from Gatwick. As I say, I would prefer to use the airport on my doorstep, but have to take cost and convenience into consideration which have made it a non starter for me for many years now.

Re: Bristol Airport

Wed Sep 07, 2016 5:40 pm

Haven't flown from Cardiff for over 5 years and that is unlikely to change. I am more than willing to pay a small premium to fly from my local airport but every time I check they are nearly always extortionately priced compared to others. Besides it's really not that far to travel to Birmingham or even Gatwick.

The bit I don't understand is we have two cities of similar size and stature, an airport has been at Rhoose for longer than Bristol yet Cardiff managed just over one million passengers last year while Bristol almost seven million. Can't get my head around such a big difference in usage.

Bristol as by far the greater catchment area. The Southwest, Wiltshire, east Wales plus several other areas! And Rhoose was being left to be run down by previous owners didn't help matters

Bristol has a huge catchment area

Cardiff airport hit a low a few years ago, but seems like it has improved quite a bit! My parents went from there yesterday and they said they enjoyed it :) the routes are better than before (and getting better) and the numbers are apparently improving. Ok, still sounds a bit expensive, but it seems like people are a bit more willing to pay it now :) I think they need to keep doing what they're doing, and maybe continue improving access

It all comes down to the airlines.
Bristol has Ryanair & Easyjet which fly to numerous routes. I fly several times a year both short and long haul and, unfortunately, have only used Cardiff once for a trip to Barcelona in the last five to six years.

I know Bristol has this big catchment area, but when you could fly direct from Cardiff to Sanford you had people from all over the place coming to Cardiff for the flight, including a lot of people from the Midlands, Birmingham in particular. You would'nt say S Wales is exactly in London's catchment area, yet thousands will travel from S Wales to Gatwick or Heathrow to get their flights. I think if Cardiff could attract the right airlines to more destinations at the right price, there is no reason why they can't compete with Bristol.

Ryanair are going to use cardiff more in the future I was speaking to one of there pilots and they said they done a deal on the fuel prices as that was what was holding cardiff back bristol s fuel was cheaper

Ryan air and easy jet are the two main reasons why Bristol are busier take them away and they will lose large percentage of their passengers ! If both came here roles be reversed!!
