Heard this 'live' over the weekend and had tears running down my face!

Another story well worth a read was Rodney Marsh explaining why he was dropped from the England Squad by Sir Alf Ramsey for non-footballing reasons....

Quote (Rodney Marsh): "The thing you have to remember is that Alf Ramsey and I came from the same place. We were both Cockneys. The other thing is that Alf tended to speak in a very poncey plum-in-the-mouth way. It was all "Oh hello Rodney and how are you?". To me it was all complete bollocks. The last time I was picked by him for England we had a team talk before the game and Alf told me we all had to work harder. "Rodney you in particular," he said in his accent. Then he said: "if you don't work hard I'm going to pull you off at half time." And I said: "Christ, at Man City all we get is a cup of tea and an orange."

Nobody laughed. And not only that, but it was the last time I ever got picked. There was a direct correlation between that sarcastic remark and me not playing again. But to be fair to Alf I also hadn't played well for England. That's not an excuse or a reason; it's just an explanation.

Still, I had a good run: I think Stan Bowles only played twice. People like Charlie George and Tony Currie only got a couple of games. But I don't blame Alf Ramsey; I blame myself.

All that stuff about maverick players, it was the culture of British football at the time and I don't regret for one minute my attitude towards football. I'm not speaking for any other player but I was born a free spirit and I played the game the same way. You either loved it or you hated it. I make no excuses for that and I wouldn't change a thing. Did that contribute to me to only getting nine caps? Probably.

Brian Clough was "different" and a genius to boot! His 'quips' are renowned and he once clipped a Forest supporter around the ear for running on to the pitch on live TV!

I was a huge Brian Clough fan and I had his voice in my head as I listened to Deano telling the story. Maybe (just maybe) it was that which made the difference :ayatollah:

Probably not, in fairness!

As I said, the guy was "different" and had many sides to him. But in footballing terms and in man management he had an air about him that would be neither appreciated or tolerated in today's player-orientated world

Was he right or wrong? I guess it depends on individuals who played under him. John McGovern, a hard Scottish midfield general (still the youngest player to play in all four English Divisions by the age of 19) followed him to several clubs (Hartlepool, Derby, Leeds and Forest) as his captain and helped deliver two Football League titles (Derby County and Forest) and two European Cups (Forest)

He was a strict disciplinarian and had some unusual ways of dealing with 'out of step' players; of which Roy Keane was one such recipient. Sadly, partially through drink and partially through the massive changes that followed the introduction of the Premier League, Brian Clough suffered an undignified end to his management career when he oversaw Forest's relegation from the Premier League before retiring and subsequently passing away

A man to divide opinions, but a legend of the game who played and managed at the highest levels :ayatollah:

Keith, really??

I'd heard that story before and always thought it to be authentic. Disappointed would be an understatement! :(

The story makes reference to the reported meeting taking place at the home of the Forest assistant manager. In an interview with him in the Guardian he says that a meeting did take place but that most of what Dean Saunders says happened he just made up ( maybe just to embellish the story to make it a better tale on his after dinner speaking engagements?) and has no basis in fact.
Shame in one way as it does come across as a good story, but seems most of it is just Deano being " economical with the truth".
There is a link to the Guardian report on Mike Morris' board if anyone wants to cut and paste it on to here

Cloughie was both brilliant and a complete tw*t. He could destroy certain players totally, like Trevor Francis and Fashanu, but completely inspire many others who were average for other managers.

No, your explanation is fine, Keith and I have no reason to doubt it. The 'Dinner Circuit' theory makes sense
