MARSHALL SAYS:HULL ARE GOING PLACES/BUT HE DID NOT RUSH TO LEAVE CITY

David Marshall opens up on the 'difficult' decision to leave Cardiff City as he heads for the Premier League

Tuesday 30th August 2016

BY PHIL SMITH

Marshall has also compared the Scottish contingent at Hull to what life was like when he first joined Cardiff

David Marshall has spoken of his heartache at leaving Cardiff City as he prepares to start a new chapter of his career at Hull.

"I feel that this is a club that is going places, but I did not rush to leave Cardiff"

The Bluebirds legend has sealed a three year deal on Humberside and admitted that the draw of the Premier League was too good to resist.

Cardiff City have received an initial £2.5m,rising to £3.5m if Marshal plays twenty five Premier League games.

Marshall said: "It’s exciting to be coming back into the Premier League and to be joining Hull,

"It was a difficult decision to move on from Cardiff because I spent a lot of time there, and it wasn’t a decision that I took lightly, but I just felt that the time was right.

"Having spoken to the people up here, I didn’t need any convincing.

"It’s all about having that new, fresh challenge to look forward to. I feel that this is a club that is going places, especially when you look at the start they have made to the Premier League season.
"This is the league where everybody wants to be. I had a little taste of it with Cardiff two or three years ago, and when you look at the managers and players that have come into the league this summer it has probably grown since that time.
"For Hull to be there, and for me to have the opportunity to come in and play there, those were the important factors in my decision to make the move."

The Bluebirds faithful know Marshall's Premier League credentials only too well. The 31-year-old was Cardiff's player of the season during the 2013/14 campaign, and was named in the division's team of the season as he made more saves than any other goalkeeper.

However, he will likely have to fight to nail down the number one jersey at the Premier League newcomers.

He will compete with Allan McGregor for both club and international starts, while Eldin Jakupovic has been in fine form as Hull have made a surprisingly strong start to the season.

McGregor is currently out of action through injury, but Marshall has said the Scottish contingent in the squad will help, just as it did when he arrived in South Wales seven years ago.

He said: "I’m quite close to Shaun Maloney having roomed with him whilst on Scotland duty,
"Obviously we’ve also got Allan McGregor, Robert Snodgrass and Andy Robertson here as well, and it does help to have those familiar faces around.

David Marshall signs for Hull City as Cardiff City say it would have been 'wrong' to block Premier League chance

"It was similar when I first joined Cardiff – there was a little Scottish contingent there as well and it all helps.
"I think there are only four or five goalkeepers in this division who can categorically say that they are their club’s number one,

"Of course I anticipate a battle for the jersey. You can’t take anything for granted and I’m here to fight for a place, I’ve always been like that wherever I’ve been.

"The standard in the Premier League is higher than anywhere and I know that I’ve got a tough fight on my hands. "
"It’s something that I’ll look forward to and not shy away from."

marshall's professionalism has never been in doubt, and he's been a fantastic player for CCFC.

no-one can begrudge him a move if he wanted to go.

Don't think he had much of a choice. Tan wanted him gone so that's the end of it. Good luck to Marsh and he deserves any success that comes to him. He has been one of the best keepers we have ever had. And also he has shown great loyalty to Cardiff City.
SCOTLAND'S NUMBE ONE !!

Nukes, once it was made clear that the club wanted him to go, he had little choice. There were reasons he wanted to stay and it was initially a tough decision. Sadly, the club's stance changed that rapidly :(

Yes Chief I understand he was happy in Cardiff and his wife and kids were happy and settled. Marsh won't be the last player to leave under Tan that's for sure

Sadly, that's all true and we watch with interest at certain other players positions at the club tomorrow :(
