Paul Trollope not feeling under pressure but admits losing David Marshall and Fabio a blow to the spirit of the Cardiff City squad

Tuesday 30th August 2016

BY PHIL SMITH

The Head Coach is adamant that his squad can recover, however as they look to strengthen in the last couple of days of the window.

Cardiff enter the international break with concerns over the strength over the squad and are looking to strengthen now.

Cardiff City Head Coach Paul Trollope has said he does not feel under pressure despite a mixed start to the season.

Bluebirds fans have been left frustrated by their side’s inability to score in four of their six competitive games this campaign, but Trollope has hailed their backing as his side chased a positive result against Reading.

He has admitted, however, that the departures of David Marshall and Fabio will leave something of a void in the Cardiff dressing room.

The pair were both fan favourites and also popular within the squad. The Brazilian brought Premier League experience while the ever consistent Marshall witnessed just about everything during seven exemplary years between the Cardiff goalposts.

His aura and presence around the Bluebirds’ set-up was always noticeable, but Trollope has said that the departures of the pair can be overcome.

He said: “Any manager or coach, you want to keep your best players. David was the captain and Fabio is a good player, and both were very, very important in the spirit of the group.

“But I’m realistic, as a football club, Premier League clubs got to a level the club were willing to take and we respect that decision. We’ve worked hard to find replacements and try not to weaken ourselves to move forward.”

News of Marshall’s imminent departure, coupled with the frustration of conceding a late goal to Yann Kermorgant, made for a difficult Saturday for Cardiff who missed the chance to go within one point of the play-offs.

Instead, they enter the international break with concerns over the strength over the squad, particularly in goal and up front.

The Bluebirds are in talks with Norwich City over a possible loan move Kyle Lafferty, but the Head Coach admitted he is not sure whether they will be able to add a new goalkeeper.

Ben Amos took a place on the bench at the weekend after arriving in Cardiff late on Friday night and Trollope expects him to compete for the Number One spot.

Despite some of the anxiety amongst the fans, the Head Coach has hailed their support and said he does not feel under pressure, despite the audible frustration at the Cardiff City stadium that has greeted the final whistle after the defeats to Reading and QPR.

He said: “No I don’t feel pressure, the job is the job. I thought the fans were terrific [on Saturday], even at 0-0 going into the latter stages of the game I thought there was a real good feeling about the ground. The fans stayed with us as a group and at the end, I was frustrated and disappointed so I can understand the reaction.

“We’ve lost at home which is obviously hugely disappointing for us, but I thought for the majority of the game the fans were great, they sang for most of it so at the end of the game that disappointment is absolutely normal.

“There’s pressure on any manager in any job, whether you’re in the Premier League or League Two. Everyone knows that the job entails and small things define how people feel, and today I really believe we did enough to be ahead in the game, taking one of those chances would have changed the complexion of it, and then unfortunately we get done with a late one and probably everything’s a disaster.

“That’s the way it works and I’m aware of that, there’s things we could have done better to prevent the goal and obviously things we could do better in terms of taking chances. We look likely but listen, we need to win games.”

Feel (a bit) sorry for the guy but working with Slade last year he knew the score working in such a poorly run club. What riles me is the club desperately trying to put a positive spin on such a sh*t situation. If anyone thinks we'll be anywhere near the playoffs then they're living in the land of clouds and cuckoos.

Trollope knew when he was given his chance by the red dictator what kind of a loopy Loo club he was taking on. If we were being run correctly then he probably wouldn't of be given the chance :bluebird:

He's realistic, and knows the score. Probably what we need now. It's going to be a long and difficult season, but that's nothing new! :bluescarf:

Getting rid of the best goalkeeper in the league and no strikers its going to be a long long season, if we stay up with the present squad it will be a miricle.Depending who we get in before deadline day ,we might have a chance.

Seen much worst over the last 50 years :old: so we must all get behind the team and encourage then like we used to do.

Many fans have only seen success, i have seen a lot of relegations over the years but we always stuck with the team as long as they try.

We need to back the manager and squad and see where we go.

So fellow BLUEBIRDS get behind the squad and back them.

If i can beat Cancer with family friends supporting me.The team can win with our support. :bluebird:

Good post, Bob. I'll have to check the number of relegations later. 8 or 9 I think I can remember! Glad to hear that your health is better.

good post.

the problem is that people will compare trollope with mackay and OGS despite the latter two having much bigger budgets. they could decide who they wanted to keep and add expensive recruits where they wanted - the ideal position to be in as a manager.

trollope instead must make do with the less valuable players, and wheel and deal to try and keep us competitive. trollope would have known this coming in to the club, but the fans are not always realistic.

its probably time to consider ditching the 5-3-2 formation though, its clearly not working after 5 games, and trollope cannot blame anyone for that, its his responsibility.

Hope I,m wrong but the task ahead will be massive for him to build a squad that can play entertaining football and grind out results when needed teams will be ahead of by Christmas and most fans will be kidding themselves that mid table will be acceptable but we could end up in bottom half fighting to survive - early days and I,m not always negative just lack of ambition by current owners and lack of club statements to raise any hopes for the near future
