DEAL COMPLETED: BENNETT SIGNS FOR CITY

PUBLISHED

27th August 2016

Left-back links up in three year Bluebirds deal...

We are delighted to confirm that former England U21 international Joe Bennett has completed a deal to join Cardiff City FC from Aston Villa, subject to international clearance.

The twenty-six year old Rochdale-born full back began his professional career with Middlesbrough in 2008, making ninety-two appearances for the Teessiders before signing for Premier League Villa in 2012.

During the last two campaigns, Joe has enjoyed promotion-pushing Championship campaigns with Brighton & Hove Albion, AFC Bournemouth and most recently, Sheffield Wednesday.

He becomes the Bluebirds’ sixth signing of the summer transfer window, will wear the number 3 shirt for the 2016/17 season and has signed a three year deal that will keep him at Cardiff City Stadium until the summer of 2019.

Joe Bennett will not be eligible to feature in today’s game with Reading due to the EFL registration process.

Aston Villa's owner has just tweeted he's allowed Joe Bennet (LB) to join us on a free transfer :ayatollah:

We have agreed to let Joe move to Cardiff for free but not subside any wages . Wish him a bright career there as many SW fans expected!

VILLA DEFENDER SET TO JOIN CARDIFF

Fri Aug 26, 2016 1:11 pm

Aston Villa have allowed defender Joe Bennett to join Cardiff City on a free transfer with the Midlands side owner Dr Tony Xia confirming the move this afternoon.

Bennett was blocked from moving to promotion rivals Sheffield Wednesday earlier on in the window but now he has secured a move away from Villa Park to the Welsh capital.

It was believed he had agreed a three-year deal at Wednesday and completed a medical before the Villa owner prevented the move at the eleventh hour.

The 26-year-old has not played for Villa in a league game in over two years and spent the past two years on loan at Brighton, Bournemouth and Sheffield Wednesday.

He was one of Paul Lambert’s first signings as manager back in 2012 from Middlesbrough but he failed to fill the void at left back.

Aston Villa now have two senior left-backs at the club with Aly Cissokho and Jordan Amavi options for manager Roberto Di Matteo.

Not a signing that particularly impresses me.

John, Richards and Connolly can all play in the left (wing) back position.

It's not an area we particularly needed strengthening in my opinion, there is also no way he is on low wages either.

Just my opinion btw before anyone has a breakdown

Great business by the club getting no fee signings in goals and lb, leaving more money for the striker we desperately need :ayatollah:

Villa not willing to let him go to a "promotion rival" but happy to let him come to us!

Shows how low we've sunk that we are not even treated as credible promotion candidates by other teams in our division!

Welcome to the club Joe and hopefully your stay with us is a long and successful one.

Good signing. Probably on less wages than Malone too, let alone Fabio!!

I must be missing something here.

How is a cash strapped Club that is trying to reduce the size of its squad and trim its wage bill signing a player that plays in a position that is covered by 3 of our squad already good business?

Also, he will be on very good wages, there is absolutely no doubt about that, he wouldn't have signed otherwise, we will be paying him at least close to what he had agreed with Sheffield Wednesday which I would imagine is not peanuts.

Don't get me wrong, in any other circumstances I would say it was a decent signing but given everything we are told about trimming the squad, wage bill etc it is bizarre.

Lets hope Trollope has got some sort of decent reason for it! At least he seems a tidy player. Perhaps we shouldn't judge until the window closes and we can see what the plan is and if its come together.

Perhaps they are planning to sell one of the other 3! :o

Connolly is Crap as a full back and Richards is needed on the right. So actualy just because they can play there doesn't mean we gave cover

Where does it say he has actually signed? Still time for this to go wrong!

Mate we've got 2 wing backs (plus peltier who is more a traditional full back). In a system that relies heavily on wing backs we need more cover with Fabio gone.

I know what your saying about connelly but he filled in a left back a few times and looked a bit uncomfortable (he was better at rb) but he's certainly not a wing back.

Also the wage scenario, maybe the club are weighing it up against Fabio leaving. 2.5m in and 27k wages out. Even if he is on a tidy wage the club are still quids in.

Richards is an out and out right back, but can play RIGHT side of midfield, have you seen connelly play left back? I have and he was terrible, even our young center back can play at right back, the only proper left back we have is Declan, lets not do a Slade and try and fit square pegs in round holes
