' TWO YELLOW CARDS IN ONE PASSAGE OF PLAY ? '

Mon Aug 22, 2016 7:07 pm

Just watching highlights of West Ham versus Bournemouth from Saturday.

West Ham full back Sam Byram committed a foul, the good old shoulder barge sending the opponent off the pitch, the ref puts the whistle towards his mouth but the ball falls favourably to Bournemouth so the ref waves play on but my opinion was that when the play stopped the ref would probably pull Byram back and card him.

As the ref waved play on Bournemouth continued with the ball on the touch line just twenty yards further forward up the pitch, Byram was hot on the heels of the player who received the ball after his initial foul and proceeded to take the second player out from behind.

This time the ref stopped the play as there was no advantage, awarded a free kick to Bournemouth, booked Byram for the second challenge, which was just 3 seconds after the initial foul and pointed to both areas of the pitch that Byram had committed the two fouls.

My question is can a player be booked for two separate fouls but in the same passage of play and therefore sent off for two bookable offences ?

Well it happened to Chris Baird playing for Northern Ireland v Hungary in a Euro qualifier, so I'd say yes.

Yes if both offences warrant yellow cards it has happened before, but problem is will a ref do it?
Yesterday's offences both warranted a yellow but guess ref wasn't prepared to do it! !

Cheers Gents.

I didn't know what the ruling was but it appears that yes a player can be booked for two yellows in one passage of play.

I'd have to disagree with that thought, as there are two separate offences here and (according to the Laws of the Game) the referee must punish both incidents, which is two Yellow Cards and means a Red Card

Example: Player commits a bookable foul and play continues until the advantage (or not) is complete. Yellow Card is issued and the player kicks the ball away in disgust. The Referee issues a second Yellow Card and then immediately a Red Card

It differs where the Referee has played an advantage and a further non-bookable foul occurs and (for example) it is in the 18 yard box, where a penalty will be awarded and not the original foul.

That is why it's called 'advantage' ;) :ayatollah:

I thought that once the ref has blown up and issued a yellow card then that passage of play has ended, so kicking the ball away is in a new passage of play, may be wrong, but that is how I see it

You are correct and can see couple of players falling foul of the new rules regarding dissent as well ! Yellow for foul and another for ott demonstration to ref. Guess it's a matter of interpretation?

Probably not the best example but it remains that the referee can punish both fouls, even if in one passage :ayatollah:
