Sky Sports Cardiff City v Reading preview

26/08/16

Cardiff must wait on Declan John before finalising their squad for Reading's Sky Bet Championship visit.

The Wales defender has been laid low by a sickness bug this week.

Bruno Ecuele Manga and Kadeem Harris will compete for a starting spot if John fails to recover in time.

Stuart O'Keefe is already back in light training after breaking his arm two weeks ago, but Aron Gunnarsson is set to continue in midfield despite being linked with a move away before the end of the transfer window.

Reading expect to be without Deniss Rakels for several months after the Latvia striker sustained a suspected fractured ankle in Tuesday's EFL Cup win over MK Dons.

In the same match defender Jake Cooper and midfielder Liam Kelly suffered a nasty clash of heads. Cooper is likely to miss the Cardiff match but Kelly should be fit.

Midfielder Joey van den Berg is available after missing the MK Dons match through suspension.

Defender Tyler Blackett is in line for a debut after joining from Manchester United at the start of the week.

Just one doubt for Cardiff City before Reading game. Declan John will be assessed today after suffering with a sickness bug this week.

Stuart O’Keefe is back in light training after his broken arm, Emyr Huws is getting up to speed and will take time to get where we want him. But we are pleased with options we have.

Stuart O'Keefe is out for 4 weeks with a broken arm.

Reading FC

Reading Football Club is an English professional football club, based in Reading, which plays in the Football League Championship. The club competed in the 2012–13 Premier League season, having gained promotion at the end of the 2011–12 season after winning the Championship, but were relegated after just one season back in the top flight.

Reading are nicknamed The Royals, due to Reading's location in the Royal County of Berkshire, though they were previously known as The Biscuitmen, due to the town's association with Huntley and Palmers. Established in 1871, the club is one of the oldest teams in England, but did not join The Football League until 1920, and had never played in the top tier of English football league system before the 2006–07 season.

The club played at Elm Park for 102 years between 1896 to 1998. The club moved in 1998 to the new Madejski Stadium, which is named after the club's co-chairman Sir John Madejski.

The club holds the record for the number of successive league wins at the start of a season, with a total of 13 wins at the start of the 1985–86 Third Division campaign and also the record for the number of points gained in the professional league season with 106 points in the 2005–06 Football League Championship campaign. Reading then finished eighth in the 2006–07 Premier League, their first ever season as a top flight club.

Tyler Blackett has signed for Championship side Reading two years on from his surprise breakthrough season at Manchester United.
Reading have signed defender Tyler Blackett from Manchester United on a three-year deal.
Blackett was handed a surprise debut in Louis van Gaal's first Premier League game in charge of United in August 2014, a 2-1 home defeat to Swansea City, and went on to make 12 first-team appearances that season.
The 22-year-old spent last term on loan with Celtic, but only played eight times for the Scottish champions and, with a route into Jose Mourinho's first-team plans appearing unlikely, he will continue his career under former United fans' favourite Jaap Stam in the Championship.
"As we know, Tyler is a talented defender who has played for United’s first team," said Reading boss Stam.

Reading FC centre-back Jake Cooper is likely to miss Saturday’s game at Cardiff due to an ankle injury.

The giant defender suffered the injury in Royal’s match against MK Dons at Madejski Stadium on Tuesday evening.

It's a further injury blow for Jaap Stam's team after striker Deniss Rakels suffered a suspected broken ankle in the same match.

Cooper ended up playing up-front after the injury left him virtually unable to run.

Royals had used their three substitutes and Cooper was put up front to try to ensure Royals’ weak link wasn’t targeted.

He was spotted after the game wearing a protective boot and assistant manager Andries Ulderink said it was likely Saturday’s game would come too soon.
